Tongass Talent Spotlight September 2015 Ms. Carol is our most veteran teacher at TSAS, and has taught Kindergarten here for 12 years. If you visit Ms. Carol’s classroom, you are very likely to walk into a room filled with hands on learning opportunities. You may see students singing songs about nature, or body mapping an important Life Skill. One very popular time in Ms. Carol’s room is during “Smart Centers,” where students move from one skill building activity to the next. If you have never attended a Celebration of Learning, or COL, in Ms. Carol’s classroom, you really should. She always does a great job of showing parents what their students have been learning through songs, dance, art, and science projects. Ms. Carol is one of the first teachers that TSAS students will have, and she has a way of making positive and lasting connections with them. Here are a few things students have said about Ms. Carol: “What I like about Ms. Carol is that she is always really nice, and never yells at anyone. She is a really nice teacher, and helps us all a lot.” “Ms. Carol takes us on really fun being there trips, and makes learning really fun.” “I like that Ms. Carol taught me 10 times 10, and how to count.” “I like that she encourages people and is nice.” We are so lucky to have Ms. Carol on our team at TSAS. Ms. Tandra has been teaching Preschool and Kindergarten at TSAS for 2 years now, and we really don’t know how we ever managed without her. You will often see Ms. Tandra outside her classroom greeting students as they enter with a smile. Ms. Tandra’s positive attitude and bubbly personality are infectious, and add to the welcoming environment she has created within her classroom. Sitting in Ms. Tandra’s class for any length of time you will see the genuine love that she has for her students, through hugs, and encouraging words. Ms. Tandra works hard to document student progress through portfolios for each student filled with writing samples, artwork, as well as math and science projects. Ms. Tandra is also currently a member of the Academic Policy Committee, or APC, and her innovative ideas and strong voice have helped to promote positive changes within our school. Here are some things that students have said about Ms. Tandra: “Ms. Tandra is nice, generous, and does a lot of things for other people.” “Ms. Tandra helps people, and makes me smile.” “She always has really cool earrings, and gives me hugs.” “I like that she always encourages us to do our best.” Thank you Ms. Tandra for all that you do! Ms. Mary has been teaching at TSAS for 9 years, as a para-professional. Ms. Mary is an invaluable member of the Preschool/Kindergarten team. Her calm manner, and funny sense of humor also makes her very popular with her students. Ms. Mary has a way of understanding children and their needs even if they can’t express it themselves. She is an excellent teacher, and gets to know all of the students in her class by finding out their interests, and by making them laugh. Ms. Mary is also very astute at knowing what skills students are exceeding in, and which skills they are struggling with. She fosters success in her students through positive words and also with “Thoughtful Thunderbirds.” Ms. Mary seems to intuitively know what “little tricks” to try that will help a struggling student to succeed, and this is one of the reasons she is such an amazing teacher to our students. Here are some things that students have said about Ms. Mary: “Ms. Mary is pretty nice, helpful, and knows a lot about boats.” “She always knows what she is doing. ” “Ms. Mary helps people when they need it.” “Ms. Mary tells funny jokes sometimes.” “I like that Ms. Mary helps me when I am having a hard time.” “She likes my stories.” We appreciate you Ms. Mary!
