RYKEN MAK FOOD ALLERGIES TO DAIRY (MILK) PRODUCTS, PEANUTS, TREE NUTS, & KIWI “SOY ALERGICO! NO PRODUCTOS DE LECHE! NO FRUTOS SECOS! NO CACAHUATE!” No food should be given to Ryken without his parents’ permission or a careful check for any dairy, nut, or kiwi ingredients by a qualified adult. Take a few moments to even check the snacks that Ryken has eaten before– sometimes ingredients change or companies uses slightly different recipes. Also check liquid soaps and dry and wet substance used for class projects and experiments should always be checked for dairy, peanut, tree nut, and kiwi products. If an ingredient label for a food product cannot be found, NEVER give it to Ryken even if he says he has had it before. (We don’t!) Ingredients can often change or be different between brands. When in doubt, do not give any food to Ryken. This is a familiar rule in our house and Ryken, as disappointed as he may be, understands that we are all trying to keep him safe. We do not allow Ryken to eat food from his friends’ lunches/snacks either in case their hands or their parents’ have handled something he is allergic to. Signs of Allergic Reactions 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Hives (urticaria) Red, itchy rash around point of contact (mouth, hands) (le salió un sarpullido) Sudden repeated sneezing (estornudar) Rubbing eyes, swelling around eyes (tallarse el ojo/los ojos) Abdominal pain, vomit (dolor abdominal, vómito) Complaints of mouth or throat feeling funny, itchy, or thick (swelling, hard to breathe)* Dry coughing* Panic, feeling of impending doom* Loss of color or turning blue* We have seen Ryken have signs #1-5 during allergic reactions. For those reactions, we have given him Benadryl Allergy and symptoms begin to be helped very soon. If you think Benadryl is needed, please give (1.5 teaspoons) and call Irene (mom/madre) immediately for advice at (XXX)XXX-XXXX or Jarvis (dad/padre) at (XXX) XXX-XXXX. Symptoms #6-9: If Ryken develops a cough or complains about his mouth or throat hurting, itching, or swelling and he looks usually pale or weak, he may be going into anaphylactic shock. Ryken is not a big complainer, but when he does complain about feeling weird, I take it very seriously. Benadryl is great for rashes but with throat swelling issues, the Epipen Jr. will keep his airway open for 20 minutes – anaphylaxis can kill in as little as 30 minutes. Administer Epipen Jr. immediately and immediately call 9-1-1 for emergency response. (Then call me!!) Thank you for your collective efforts to keep Ryken safe!
