CASE 2013 Planning Committee Telecon – 2/4/2013 Convened about 12:02 PM; adjourned at 12:49 PM EST On the call (as best as I could tell): Allen Arrington David Dress Nancy Andersen Alison Lauderbach Jim Blohowiak Carmela Brittingham Mat French Laura McGill Satoshi Nagano Jimmie McEver Brett Hoffstadt Reece Lumsden Bryan Herdlick Agenda: Track Status Monday Events Staff Update Around the horn…. Monday CASE Events: We started a good discussion last week about the Monday afternoon event (still deciding if this is a presentation session, poster session, workshop, so for now it is an event). o Mat indicated that the initial thought was an informal paper session to provide a status report on G-135 development; probably will just focus on one session. o Opportunity to cast a wider net by bringing INCOSE. Jimmie is involved with the development of the INCOSE complex systems primer. o Allen asked Mat and Jimmie to discuss options for the Monday afternoon event; we also roped Laura into this to get the AIAA Standards Executive Council perspective. Allen has the action to coordinate a telecon for later this week (if possible). Monday morning workshop. Per discussion Between Wilson and Allen, the Monday morning event will be called the “Executive Workshop” rather than a roundtable. This is what the Management TC called the event last year and we want folks to realize that active participation is expected. o Allen will contact Tom Irvine about getting a Management TC POC to participate more closely with the overall CASE planning. CASE 2013 Planning Committee Telecon 10, 2/4/2013 Page 1 Track Updates and Status Track 3: Nancy provided the status report: o Working on confirming the session chairs and key panelists/speakers. o Once we get confirmation on the session chairs we need to schedule a regular meeting for Track 3 planning. Track 2: Update from David: o Three sessions in the works (titles have not been set, but here are the themes): Moving testing earlier in the design process; Mark is the lead. More emphasis on V&V earlier in the design process; Alison is the chair and Jim is co-chair. Issues with computation and ground test moving earlier in the process; Steve is the lead. o The idea is to start at the high level perspective then move into more detail. o The team is having weekly meetings to work the details. o Allen was a little concerned about having the entire track sort of zeroed in on one theme; an important and timely issue, but perhaps more diversity in the track. Merely a suggestion. o Bryan indicated that ITEA has been working this topic since the 90s, but that there were still opportunities to cover new material related to large scale systems, systems-of-systems and complex systems. Bryan will capture these thoughts in an email to David. Allen suggested that Bryan should be included in the Track 2 planning discussions. Track 1: Laura provided the following update: o Still looking for a track co-chair. If anyone has any suggestions, please let Laura know. Allen will ask Wilson during their Thursday call. o Session themes: Lessons learned; what we did wrong (focus on failures and what we can learn). Model-Based Engineering. Managing Complexity; possible session chair is Dan DeLaurentis from Purdue. Engineering Resilient Systems o Nancy brought up human factors and the meeting we had a week or so ago with David Fuller to figure out how/where to insert this material into the program. Seems that human factors will not be a stand-along session but elements could fit into themes presented for Tracks 1 and 3 (more tactical in Track1 and strategic in Track 3). o Suggested that a session could be developed on “integration of the human into the system” perhaps in Track 1 or 2. Human-centric systems. o Addition related comment on Track 1 content: Capabilities-based testing; requirements have been clearly articulated (tie to Track 2). Emphasis at INCOSE on Model-Based Engineering; another opportunity to bring INCOSE into CASE. Jimmie brought up the term “anti-fragile”….just Google it, you’ll get a better understanding that my poor notes will provide. Short story is a system that is beyond resilient and actually gets stronger in a chaotic environment. CASE 2013 Planning Committee Telecon 10, 2/4/2013 Page 2 Interestingly, this came up in a conversation between Jim Vasatka (Aviation Forum Chair) and Allen last week; it is a theme that Jim is working in the overall forum and would like to have woven into CASE and the technical tracks. Bio-inspired design methodology. Allen reminded the Track Chairs to use the program details tabs in the planning spreadsheet to start layout out the plans for their tracks and sessions (session chairs, moderators, panelists, speakers, etc. with the timing for the sessions). AIAA Staff Notes: Carmela provided the following update: There was an Aviation Forum steering committee meeting this morning. o Working on the event preview; will need to include CASE input. The plan is to have the draft ready next week. Will use existing CASE materials for the draft, then we can adjust as needed. Technical program abstracts are due on 2/28. Two targeted emails on CASE have been sent so far. Carmela will coordinate a meeting with her, Craig, Jim, Dave Maroney and Allen to discuss the overall forum program layout. Jim has made a few changes at the forum level, but they should not impact CASE. However, there are still questions about how CASE will be listed in the program due do Scholar One limitations). Around the horn…. Reece asked for clarification on the number of sessions for each track. Here’s the deal: There are 6 session blocks available for CASE. Block 1 (first block on Tuesday morning) and Block 6 (last block on Wednesday afternoon) will be used for the CASE opening and wrap-up sessions, respectively. That leaves 4 blocks for the tracks to use. The present thinking is that there will be one shared session between all three tracks (Workforce issues; Track 3 is the lead). This leaves three session blocks for the parallel session for the three Tracks. Note that there can be other shared sessions between tracks, but at present only the Workforce session has been identified. Meeting Schedule: Next telecon is set for 2/11; same bat time, same bat station…. The 2/18 telecon will be canceled due to the Federal Holiday. We will continue with the weekly telecons mostly likely through March.
