Mission Statement:

Muskegon Community College will serve as a resource and an advocate for sustainability. Sustainability has been defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Sustainability at

Muskegon Community College involves a multidisciplinary approach to reduce consumptions of resources currently and in the future by operating within an environmental, social and economic context.

Jeff Stipes suggested using the titles environmental, social and economic contexts as sectioning options for goal headings.

Current Sustainable Practices:

Gerald Nyland explained the Siemens project lowers the amount of energy usage by updating the lighting and HVAC systems.

Additions to Current Sustainable Practices:

1.

ChargePoint electric car charging stations

2.

Lower paper consumption rates by distributing many student records electronically

3.

Replacing computing servers to a cloud computing system

Proposed Projects:

1.

Notebooks for faculty and staff

2.

Invite MAREC to utilize our facility for LED incubator

3.

Sponsor faculty and staff to attend alternative energy course

4.

Hosting events for local vendors for sustainability

5.

Holding workshops educating lost skills including canning, gardening, etc.

6.

Promoting sustainability techniques into faculty coursework

7.

Education on recycling plastic and other sources

8.

New energy efficiency projects

9.

Participate in wider community efforts and bring more new, local ideas to campus

10.

Composting

11.

New hands-on training for students and staff

12.

Utilize spring water under college

13.

Set printer to double-sided and grayscale.

Project Activities:

Gerald Nyland and Jeff Stipes will be working to gain funding and researching options to bring lighting powered by solar panels and a wind turbine.

Debra Howell and Renae Hesselink will partner in coordinating an onsite donation center for electronics with Goodwill Industries and West Shore Symphony.

Margaret Pibuldhanapatana and Stanley Dean are promoting metal bottle usage and acquiring a water filtration station for student and faculty use.
