INTERDISCIPLINARY HUMANITIES
PATHWAY TO MEDICINE PROGRAM

APPLICATION FOR PARTICIPATION
This application must be submitted to the IHPM Committee by
February 23, 2015. Late applications will not be considered. All
candidates will be notified of status, finalists to be interviewed.
The applicant will submit Part I as a PDF or MSWord document via
e-mail to the Committee c/o phillito@wfu.edu. Part II must be
completed and submitted as an actual paper copy delivered to 102
Reynolda Hall. Recommendation letters can be sent via e-mail
directly from the recommender.
The potential candidate or applicant is urged to review carefully the
admissions and Program criteria below. Candidates should share
their interest in this program with family members and mentors to
consider if IHPM best suits their needs. IHPM is a distinct and
rigorous program to encourage a broad humanities education in
support of the altruistic goals and practical study of medicine at
Wake Forest School of Medicine. If successful in meeting
requirements at the undergraduate level, Program participants are
committed to enroll in Wake Forest School of Medicine.
ADMISSIONS AND PROGRAM CRITERIA
A completed application is due February 23, 2015. The Pathway
Program Committee will choose a limited number of Pathway Program
finalists who will be invited to interview. Selectees will pay a nonrefundable deposit of $250 as part of the commitment to the Program.
This deposit is due by June 1, 2015.
Primary criteria for preparation to apply for admission into the
Interdisciplinary Humanities Pathway to Medicine Program include:


completion of first year and fall semester of the sophomore
year in Wake Forest College (on rare occasions, applications may
be accepted from the junior year);


a completed application including an essay that shows
commitment to the Pathway Program, its philosophy and
requirements;


a minimum 3.5 grade point average overall, including a
minimum 3.0 grade point average and no grade below C in
medical school prerequisite classes;


an exemplary honor, judicial, and conduct record;


a resume of service in community-related health care;


the understanding and agreement to apply to and
matriculate into only the Wake Forest School of Medicine.
Deferrals of admission will not be allowed in the Pathway
Program. The offer of acceptance to the Wake Forest School of
Medicine will be rescinded should application be made to any
other medical school.
Primary criteria for successful entry into Wake Forest School of
Medicine include:
 
maintenance of a minimum 3.5 grade point average at
graduation, with no grade below C in medical school prerequisite
courses and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in medical school prerequisite
courses;


continued exemplary conduct and service;


completion of a major in the humanities or fine arts;


completion of the Interdisciplinary Humanities minor,
including HMN 370, Medicine and the Humanities, and concluding
with HMN 396, Individual Study, a capstone thesis (HMN 396 is a
required senior thesis related to global, regional, or community
health, health policy, a biomedical ethical or moral issue, or other
biomedical issues broadly defined. Such a thesis might focus on the
history of medicine; spirituality and wellness; the history of public
health; social and cultural constructs of health and illness;
narrative medicine; medicine and literature; or other topics);


minimum score of 30 on the Medical College Admissions
Test (MCAT) (or equivalent score on the revised MCAT) and
satisfaction of all other standard requirements for admission to the
Wake Forest School of Medicine.
Acceptance into Wake Forest School of Medicine remains conditional
until completion of all Program and College graduation requirements.
Note that approval of the Pathway Program Committee is required to
take any medical school prerequisite course at a location other than
Wake Forest College. For additional information on this Program,

Attach a current resume or curriculum vitae of no more than one page.

Attach an essay of not more than 1000 words. Explain how your choice of major is related to
your commitment to pursue a career as a physician and why the IHPM program is a “good fit”
for you. Some of the questions you may want to address include the following: Who are you?
What experiences have helped you know that medicine is a “good fit” for you? What do you
want the committee to know about you and your journey to this point? What do you hope to
gain from the IHPM program?

Ask two faculty members who have taught you to write letters in your behalf. One letter should
come from a science faculty member; one letter should come from a humanities or fine arts
faculty member.
