Mathematics support
The Mathematics enhancement course4 prepares graduates from non-mathematics disciplines to train to teach
mathematics in a secondary school. Applicants should be keenly interested in mathematics; this is more important
than the level of any existing qualification in the subject.
The course runs annually from January to July, for applicants who have an A level in mathematics, and from
September to July for others, who typically have a high grade GCSE in mathematics.
Science support
Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses are now offered by the University of Hull in chemistry5 and physics6. The
aim of these courses is to develop your subject knowledge in physics or chemistry to a level at which you will be able
to teach the subject in a secondary school. You will study GCSE and GCE A level specifications in a way that is
specifically developed for this purpose.
Language support
The Language French enhancement course7is a way for graduate linguists with little or no French to undertake an
intensive course prior to beginning Initial Teacher Training. This enables graduate linguists to teach French to
children in the secondary phase to Key Stage 3 (pupils aged 11 – 14) and beyond and therefore significantly increases
their employment potential.
This course will run between the beginning of June and the end of August, starting with a two week 'ab-initio' course
for those with no French. Those with just a little French join in the second week of the 'ab-initio' course.
There will be daily sessions between 9.00 am and 1.30 pm with further self-access work either on or off campus.
The French Booster course8 is a full-time, 4 week course designed to enable graduate linguists to teach French
confidently and accurately at Key Stage 5 (pupils aged 16 –18).
In 2014, the course will run from 28 July to 22 August with daily sessions between 9.00 am and 12.15 pm and 1.00
pm - 2.00 pm and three hours of further self-access work either on or off campus.
