Mission statement: Create major change through color, delivered in the least invasive
way possible; backed up by fair pricing, surrounded by safe, clean, and skilled technicians.
Target Market: XYZ Painting’s target market is primarily residential repaint. Our secondary markets
include insurance restoration, tenant improvement and remodeling repaint. We are beginning to be
involved with some local fast food chains repainting as well.
XYZ Painting is a primarily a painting contractor, but we also do small scale drywall installation and
repair work and wall paper removal/install.
Form of ownership: XYZ Painting is part of Smith and Company Services, Inc. DBA Rite Painting a
Washington State “S” Corporation.
Company history: XYZ Painting has been in business since July of 2003. It has always been held privately
by John and Sue Smith. XYZ Painting has a very good reputation for quality work and ethical business
standards in the Seattle area. XYZ Painting has more than doubled since its inception. The only year that
XYZ Painting had a significant problem job was 2007 on a condo complex repaint. This was to be a two
year project and XYZ Painting successfully got out of the second year phase and managed to keep good
rapport with the association upon doing so. Valuable lessons were learned about density of cars and the
risks associated with long term rental of expensive equipment.
Most important strengths and core competencies: XYZ Painting through it’s owners has a very ethical
business standard. We strive to leave every job with customers feeling satisfied that they have received
a good value and that all parties have been treated fairly. That has allowed us to receive a very good
customer referral base and break into some new markets like the fast food industry by referral. We have
maintained very good long term relationships with some General Contractors, one of them for 5 years
now. We do not compromise our standards and have on two different occasions stopped doing business
with General Contractors we feel forced us to comprise our standards and ethics.

Significant challenges the company faces now and in the near future: The greatest threat XYZ Painting
faces at this point is the economic downturn. At this point it has not significantly damaged our business
and we feel we have put into place systems, much more marketing, good search engine optimization,
networking, grass roots marketing in neighborhoods as we are working jobs to minimize its impact, but
some of the current issues are out of our control.
Long term: We are increasing advertising on many fronts to double our business over the next two
years. We are not participating in an economic downturn.

with this decision.
Multi‐Color wall and ceiling transitions:
Trends today are leaning toward lighter ceilings with darker walls. While this is more difficult XYZ
Painting experts create laser sharp transitions.
Drywall Repair:
XYZ Painting will repair holes in walls, cracks, texture imperfections, etc.
Wall Paper removal and installation:
Wall coverings are making a comeback, but not the whole house. That’s why we offer removal and
installation.
Accent walls:
Add some color without overpowering the room, or make a room look cozier.
Painted millwork applications:
Spruce up previously painted doors and base molding, or newly installed applications.

Pressure wash and mildecide:
Wash to remove dirt and peeling paint, mildecide where mildew is present or to brighten up cedar
shakes.
Scrape Sand and Caulk:
Remove old peeling paint, sand to feather out the edges, caulk where needed.
Paint:
Apply premium latex paint to the home by expert technicians.

Operational Plan
XYZ Painting is run from the central office at: 1234 NE 2nd Place, Kenmore, WA 12345.
The office staff consists of John Smith (President) and Sue Smith (Sec. /Treas.)
John Smith: Responsible for sales/estimating, daily operations.
Sue Smith: Responsible for finance, all administrative duties and marketing.
The field consists of teams, each headed by a Journey man painter with one or two apprentices based
upon job needs. Job descriptions can be located in employee handbook.
Production
• Each job is assigned a job packet with the detailed job description and expected time frames as
assigned by PACER. The Journey man painter is required to read and follow this and consult John Smith
with any questions or concerns. A daily report keeps management informed of progress.
• At the end of each job a final check list is completed by the journeyman painter and turned into the
office with the final report. Only after the checklist has been completed may the employee and the
owner/manager to do a final walk through.
After any punch items have been taken care of final billing is sent to the customer for payment.
• Each job is assigned materials and supplies as needed. Sundry items are to be picked up at the shop
when picking up the van for the day. One stop at the paint store on the way out our back to the shop is
permitted in a day; there should not be a need to retrieve supplies in the middle of a work day.

Credit Policies
XYZ Painting has a due upon completion policy with residential customers. The credit policy for General
Contractors varies by General and the agreement with the. We primarily take checks. We will take credit
cards, but do not promote it.
