Port Placement Sedation The sedation you received for your procedure is still in your system. Therefore, we would like you to take it easy for the rest of the day (do not drive and avoid drinking alcohol). You should urinate within 8 hours of your procedure. Sometimes sedation can make this difficult. If you do not urinate in 8 hours, please call the office or visit your local ER. Diet You may eat your usual diet as soon as you get home. Activity You may resume your regular activities. No strenuous activity or lifting heavy objects for the next 7 days. No swimming or tub baths until your incision is completely healed (about 14 days) Pain Management You may use over the counter medications such as Tylenol or Advil for minor discomfort if you are allowed to take those medications. If you were taking Coumadin/Xarelto prior to this procedure, you may resume it on _______________ Care for Your Port Your wound is held together by dissolvable sutures. Keep the dressing dry for the first 2 days. Starting on the third day, you may shower after removing the dressing. Do not remove the paper strips but allow them to fall off on their own. No dressing is needed. You were given an identification card with your port information on it, please keep this in your wallet. When the port is not in regular use, it needs to be flushed once a month by your physician or nurse.
