PRESS RELEASE KMA SETS UP DISASTER RAPID RESPONSE TEAM The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has taken notice of the torrential rains which have led to heavy flooding in Accra resulting in loss of lives and destruction of properties. Information from the Meteorological Services Department also indicates that, there will be heavy rains across the country in the coming days. At an emergency meeting of the Metro Security Council (METSEC) held today June 4, 2015, the KMA has put in place contingency measures to protect life and property. The METSEC has therefore constituted a Metro Disaster Rapid Response Team comprising the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Military, the Police Service, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Ambulance Service to deal with any emergency that may arise in Kumasi due to the rains or any other hazard. The KMA would therefore, like to remind the public of the Assembly’s bye-laws which prohibit people littering in the metropolis. Residents are hereby cautioned to desist from throwing garbage into the gutters and drains which choke the waterways and bring about flooding. Members of the public are entreated to desilt gutters in their surroundings to help prevent flooding. The Assembly wishes to inform stakeholders that, drains at some of the major flood prone areas, such as Kronom –kwrapa, Atonsu Kuwait, S-line, Ramsyer, Bremang Nkwantwuma, Atafoa have been desilted while efforts are continuing to ensure that other areas are also worked upon.
