February 2014 Issue 6: Year 4 Dunston Dossier CLOSURE OF THE CHILDREN’S PLAY AREA IN THE GROUNDS OF DUNSTON VILLAGE HALL. Dunston Parish Council has decided to close the Children's Play Area in the grounds of Dunston Village Hall for safety reasons. Thanks to IDEAS, plans for building a new Children's Play Area on the Village Playing Field (Dolly's Paddock) are at an advanced stage and if the application for a grant is successful construction work should start in Spring. Although the closure of the Children's Play Area will be an inconvenience for many families, most people would agree that it is sensible to put the money that it would cost to repair it towards the new modern Children's Play Area on the Village Playing Field. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – PUBLIC MEETING 27TH JANUARY If you were not able to attend the public Meeting on Monday, you can still contact any member of Dunston Parish Council to let them know what you think about a neighbourhood plan for Dunston and if you would like to be involved in helping to develop one. A Neighbourhood Plan would be taken into consideration in decisions about planning. There are a number of proposed developments locally that will have an impact on Dunston residents in respect of access to doctors, schools, services, infrastructure, and increased traffic on the B1188 and property values. There are proposals to build up to 400 new houses in Metheringham between Kings Rd and the railway bridge on Dunston Road. (There are just over 300 houses in Dunston!). What are your views on Wind Turbines on Nocton/Dunston Fen, Fracking and industrial developments in our countryside? Once a site has been used for these types of developments it becomes a brown field site. The inclusion of any material in Dunston Dossier will be at the discretion of the editors whose decision is final. No responsibility for the accuracy of comments provided will be accepted. E-mail: admin@dunstondossier.org.uk . Editors: - Diana Hammond 320460 & Jean Ford 320810 website: www.dunstondossier.org.uk. 1 NOCTON FEN WIND TURBINES From the map published by Vattenfall on their website, the proposed development area for the Wind turbines includes part of Dunston Fen. The wind turbines are likely to be 150 metres high and when erected will be visible for a considerable distance. Whatever your opinions are about the effectiveness of wind turbines, the planned erection of between 17 and 23 wind turbines would have a major impact on the Lincoln Area and there are numerous factors to be considered. PNF – NO WINDTURBINES is a new organisation formed by local people from Wasps Nest, Nocton, Potterhanworth, Dunston, Bardney, Branston Booths & Metheringham who are opposed to the proposal to erect up to 23 wind turbines on Nocton/Dunston Fen. They hope to have a website on line soon but until then information and contact details are available from the Nocton Blogspot. VATTENFALL have now compiled a Feedback report on their information sessions held in November. There is a link to their report on the Dunston Dossier website or you can download a copy from www.vattenfall.co.uk DONATIONS TO THE DUNSTON DOSSIER & HUB Diana and Jean would like to thank Linda & Keith Harper and Sheila & Gordon Horry for their kind donations to the Dunston Dossier & Hub. As you know, the costs of producing the Dunston Dossier monthly newsletter and website is met from income from the Dunston Hub, local business advertising and funds raised at our two Craft Fairs each year. The Dunston Hub is financed by the 50:50 raffle, a 10% of sales donation from stall holders and the sale of teas, coffees and cakes. Any funds left after payment of expenses are used to finance the newsletter. Could you help with the production of the monthly newsletter? For over three years, Diana and Jean have together produced the monthly newsletter ready for delivery to you by our team of volunteer distributors at the beginning of each month. Each month we print 375 copies of the newsletter on domestic printers, fold them and pack them for each distributor. Could you help print the newsletter (even if it is only once or twice a year)? We can provide a printer, paper & inks and the newsletter copy in Word. For more information contact Diana on 320460 or Jean on 320810. 2 DANCE CLASSES & WORKSHOPS IN DUNSTON VILLAGE HALL. Caroline 323153 4 IDEAS - developing the playing field The New Year’s Eve Family Night was a huge success and well attended by Dunston residents of all ages - certainly an event to repeat at the end of 2014. The Scottish Country dancing was very popular and a Ceilidh evening will be organised later in the year for all of us to have a go again. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this event such a success especially our young DJ, Jordan. The 50/50 Cash Prize Draw amounting to over £220 was won by D. Morley. The Family Night raised £371. Carol Singing also raised £215 for IDEAS funds. Unfortunately our next event, ‘All Wrapped Up’ a demonstration by Jane Means ( known as the Gift Wrap Guru ) has had to be cancelled as Jane is unexpectedly off to Kuwait to do TV appearances and demos – this event will be rescheduled. Young IDEAS. Congratulations to Dunston youngsters who came up with their own idea based on the Great British Bake Off of icing cakes large and small and their attitude in supporting the development of the playing field. These young people organised the event themselves, including appointing the judges, drumming up support from their friends and the school children locally, asking local businesses for prizes and after the event wrote thank-you letters to all involved in helping them. What a fantastic start to 2014 - their first fundraising event raised £131.60 - Brilliant!! The youngsters have some thoughts for their next fundraising events, including a Lego building competition and a Disco. PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION - IDEAS are inviting residents young and old alike to start taking snaps of events, people, animals, birds, village activities, in fact any good photo opportunities in Dunston over the next few months. Entries to the competition will be judged in October and if there are sufficient good photos we will have a village calendar printed for 2015. There will be 3 competition categories: primary school children or younger, senior school children up to age 18 and 18years and over. All photos must be taken this year please. Further details Diana 320460. IDEAS is still waiting with bated breath to hear if their recent application for funding has been successful. 5 WHY NOT MAKE 2014 THE YEAR THAT YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN YOUR VILLAGE? Dunston is a pretty and tranquil village and, scratch the surface, there is so much going on. In fact the community spirit here makes Dunston a really lovely village to live in as it has so much to offer for young to old alike. Nearly every activity in this village is freely run by volunteers. i.e. The Bowls Clubs, Chapel and Church and all their activities, Friends of Dunston St Peters School-Parents Committee, Dossier publication, IDEAS, The Hub, Parish Council, Silver Sounds Band, , Twinning Association and the Village Hall – we could go on. However, the success of all these ventures is only as good as the people who freely give of their time and expertise to organise them. Could you spare some time to help out? At the present time IDEAS (the group working hard to provide play equipment, tennis courts etc. on the playing field) and the Village Hall Committee (who manage, maintain and improve facilities in the Hall) need support from residents to further achieve their ambitions for the future of this village Even a couple of hours making tea or organising a fund raising event etc. would be welcome or perhaps wielding a paint brush is more your style – whatever you can offer in time or expertise would be welcome. To offer some help contact Diana Hammond 320460, Jane Lamyman 320287 (for IDEAS) Jean and Robert Ford 320810 (for the Village Hall) Last Minute News: Once again Silver Sounds Band took part in the Butlin’s Mineworkers Brass Band Festival and was complimented on their performances. Congratulations to all involved, 6 VILLAGE GRUMBLES LITTER. Please put your litter in the bin or take it home & dispose of it. It is illegal to leave litter and just like fly-tipping, perpetrators will be fined. The siting of a few CCTV cameras is being explored to catch persistent offenders on camera - so watch out!!! DOG FOULING. Despite constant grumbles this is still a problem in the village. However, we now have a problem with some people who DO pick up their dog’s poo BUT they are too lazy to dispose of the bag in the Dog Bins and they just dump them in the hedge along the roadside or footpath. Even worse some totally irresponsible people throw them over hedges putting the lives of sheep, cattle and wildlife at risk. If you can’t look after your dog responsibly then don’t have a dog!!!!! FOOTPATHS & BRIDLEWAYS. From comments the Dossier has received it seems that there is some confusion about the use of rural byways so hopefully the following information will clarify the situation. Footpaths: This public right of way is meant for pedestrians only. You are allowed to walk your dog as long as it is under your close control. When walking a dog, you must ensure that it keeps to the public footpath and does not trespass into nearby properties. Prams, pushchair or wheelchairs can also be used on a footpath. Bridleways: These are meant for walkers, horseriders and cyclists. Cyclists are expected to give way to walkers and horseriders. Byways Open To All Traffic (BOAT).These byways are normally marked "byways" and are open to motorists, cyclists, horseriders, motorcyclists and pedestrians. As with public tarmac road networks, motorists must ensure that they are legally authorised to use BOATs (i.e. registered, taxed, insured and MoT’d). Restricted Byways: Restricted Byways are open to the traffic mentioned above in BOATs, but exclude motor vehicles and motorcycles. 7 EVENTS FOR FEBRUARY 2014 3 Feb (Mon) Parish Council Meeting 13 Feb (Thur) DUNSTON HUB 15 Feb (Sat) Village Hall (L) Village Hall 7.30 pm 2 to 4 pm New Kitchen Celebration Methodist Chapel 3 to 6 pm 17 Feb (Mon) The POD Village Hall Car Park 11 am to 5 pm 21 Feb (Fri) Lunch Club Methodist Chapel 23 Feb(Sun) Bollywood:Family Workshop 24 Feb(Mon) Village Hall (DVHMC) AGM Village Hall (L) 25 Feb(Tue) Dance Class( Primary Age) Village Hall 3.30pm 25 Feb(Tue) Dance Class( Secondary Age) Village Hall 4.15 pm Village Hall 12 noon 2 pm to 4 pm 7.30 pm EVENTS FOR MARCH 2014 3 Mar (Mon) Parish Council Meeting Village Hall (L) 13 Mar(Thur) DUNSTON HUB Village Hall 16 Mar(Sun) Brassability : Family Taster Session Village Hall 2 to 4.30pm 21 Mar (Fri) Lunch Club 23 Mar(Sun) Musical Theatre:Family Workshop Village Hall 2 pm to 4 pm Village Hall = Main Hall Methodist Chapel 7.30 pm 2 to 4 pm 12 noon Village Hall (L) = Lamyman Room 8
