LUCY CAVENDISH COLLEGE GUIDELINES for Travel, Research, Conferences, Medical & Veterinary Electives Read this page carefully BEFORE you complete your APPLICATION Are you eligible? Undergraduates must discuss their application with their Director of Studies. Graduates must discuss their application with their Graduate Supervisor and/or Tutor, as applicable. Activities must be for a project related to a student’s undergraduate or graduate work, and supported by a reference from their Director of Studies OR Graduate Supervisor. The majority of MPhils are taught courses and do not require research trips. Requests from graduate students on courses other than research-based ones may be considered for funding if circumstances are exceptional. A student should consult their College Tutor in the first instance. Applications will only be considered if a report in relation to any previous grants from Lucy Cavendish has been submitted to the Studentship & Bursary Fellow by email at st420@cam.ac.uk. Grants are not normally made for activities which take place after the completion of final exams, or final piece of coursework or dissertation, or Ph.D thesis. How to apply Forms and any separate sheets must be completed electronically and submitted in ONE pdf document by email to Sarah Thomas, st420@am.ac.uk Your referee must submit their reference by email, or email attachment in pdf format, to Sarah Thomas, st420@am.ac.uk. Information you should be aware of Applicants are expected to seek funding from all other available sources, including their own Faculty or Department. The College does not fund travel to a student’s home country, but may fund conference registration fees etc in the home country. The Committee may consider a student’s academic record, financial need, references received and the contribution made to College life. Grants can be sought for summer schools, internships, and pupillages, but students must show they will be of benefit to their academic progress. A successful applicant will be expected to produce evidence that they have been accepted for the summer school, internship or pupillage they are applying for funding for. Only one travel grant will be made per year to an individual Ph.D student, except in exceptional circumstances. No more than three travel grant awards will be granted across the course of one PhD degree. Due to demand on funds, individual vets are unlikely to be awarded more than £450 per academic year for an elective, and medics are unlikely to be awarded more than £500 for each elective. The College does not have the resources to fund language courses at the University Language Centre. The College does not normally support attendance at a conference unless a student is presenting a paper or poster. If you are made an award you will need a UK bank account to receive payment. Recipients of awards must write a report on the activity for which they have been granted an award, and may be asked to write a short interest piece for the College website. Proof will be required to account for expenditure, for example: Travel: Booking confirmation email and/or boarding pass, train ticket Accommodation: Booking confirmation and/or credit or debit card or cash payment receipt Conference registration: Booking confirmation and/or payment receipt Meals & subsistence: Receipts Grants not accounted for by proof of expenditure may need to be recredited to the College by the recipient.
