Annex: Library of best practices template Country Spain Entity Granollers City Council Location Granollers, Barcelona area Identification of the Best Practice Improved installation of indoor lighting efficiency criteria in a municipal school Main area Energy Efficiency in Buildings With the aim of contributing to energy efficiency, reducing emissions and saving energy and money at municipal facilities in Granollers the “Municipal School of Work” has done an action to improve the installation of indoor lighting of this center.. Summary Target Group This reform has included: the substitution of existing lighting in several areas for the new recessed ceiling lights with LEDs; the substitution of fluorescent tubes in classrooms with new tubes LED’s, keeping the light, but canceling ballasts; the installation of movement sensors and light sensors for automatic turn-on of indoor lighting in common areas, corridors and classrooms. Director and manager of school (in terms of improving the school economical budget) Professors, pupils and other users of school spaces (in terms of improving school indoor comfort) Granollers City Council (in terms of saving energy, reducing% GHE and the costs of energy supply school. The actions done per school areas are : Description Corridors: substitution of 24 fluorescent lights of 4x36 W with a consumption of 198 W each, per 33 LED lighting with a consumption 26 W each; substitution of 8 lights of 2x36W with a consumption of 101 W each, per 8 units of tubes LED's with a consumption of 38 W each. Classrooms: substitution of 644 fluorescent tubes per 765 tubes LED’s with a power of 19 W each. Measured consumption of an old light of two tubes of 36 W was about 101 W, while the present consumption per new light is about 38 W. In addition, the school has installed heating with natural gas boiler in the library, in substitution of 6 old electric heaters with a power of 2000 W each, and a system of air conditioning in the auditorium and offices of the old building to improve the indoor comfort. Date Implementation approach followed 2012 a) Steps: analysing electrical consumption from indoor lighting; benchmarking the cost and energy saving from existing lighting per new lighting energy less consumer; implement the substation of lighting; measure and monitor the present electrical consumption to assure the energy saving. b) Stakeholders involved: school Director’s, City Council energy manager, lighting installation company. 1 Economic aspects Initial investment: Total savings: ROI: 43.720 € 10.930 €/year 4 years Total electricity consumption before action: 107.069 kWh/year Total electricity savings: 60.727 kWh /year Total GHG emissions savings: 16,21 tCO2eq/year* Results * Own calculation from the GHG emission calculator of Catalan Office for Climate Change, 2012. Risks/Difficulties Initial investment capacity of different public buildings; ROI; difficulties in analyzing power consumption from lighting. Photos Contact Person Mr. Carles Borrell, school director.
