WTU Calculation Guide
Weighted Teaching Units (WTUs) are the faculty workload generated for a course. The calculations of WTUs
are based on course classification (CS number). Courses with zero units carry zero WTUs.
Definitions and Calculations



Adjusted Course Credit Units (A-CCU): course credit units used to determine the faculty WTUs.
Course Classification Number (CS Number): a code which indicates the mode of instruction of a given
section or CS segment.
Workload factor: each CS number has a workload factor. Factor may be k-(C classification courses) or s(S classification courses).

C77 and C78 courses generate zero WTUs.
o K-factor courses (C1-C21)………………………… WTUs= A-CCU x k-factor
o S-factor courses (S23, S25, S36, S48):………..WTUs= Enrollment x s-factor

WTU Calculation Guide (continued)

When courses share an instructor, day, and time a section fraction is calculated to prevent over
assignment of WTUs. CS# 1-21 only.
o Section fraction= course enrollment/ Sum enrollment
o Adjusted WTU= (A-CCU x k-factor) x section fraction
