PROTECTIVE SERVICES CAREER PATHWAY PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Students trained in the Protective Services Career Pathway will develop an overview of law enforcement and its basic functions. Our program uses local public service agencies as an extension of the classroom. Upon completion of the career pathway requirements, students will have the basic working knowledge and skills needed to be competitive and highly marketable. The student will have the capability to pursue an administration of justice career with continued specialized training. Further post-secondary education is highly recommended. Students selecting this career pathway should be interested in working in the public safety world. Opportunities to gain work experience and build relationships are an integral part of the program. Students successfully completing the program requirements will be able to explain the general organization, function, and jurisdiction of policing agencies including the processing and detention, case disposition, and case statutes and court procedures. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and application of the fundamentals of officer’s safety when applied to traffic stops, building searches, suspect control, and critical incidents. Students will be able to apply the most frequently used sections of the penal code and other criminal statutes. Additionally, students will compose a work-ready portfolio, which includes a cover letter, resume, letters of recommendation, and certificates of achievement/recognition. Students will gain real-life application skills by participating in a minimum 20-hour field work experience. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS (All courses require a grade of “C” or better) Some careers in this pathway include: Firefighter Police officer Crime scene investigator Probation officer Correctional officer Level 1: At least 10 credits Computer Applications (Mandatory) Beginning Photography Photography ROP Forensic Science Level 2: At least 20 credits Intro to Law Enforcement (Mandatory) Beginning Photography Photography ROP Forensic Science Experiential Learning: A minimum of 20 hours Projects require prior approval from Instructor and instructor grade upon completion of project Complete the work ready certification program; including a final interview with a community business member PROGRAM BENEFITS Students who successfully complete the program requirements are invited to a luncheon in which they are presented with a certificate of achievement. Graduating seniors are presented with a YCHS Career Pathway cord. Please use the application on the back of this pamphlet to apply for your Career Pathway certificate and graduation cord.
