CURE Childhood Cancer’s “A Tribute to Our Quiet Heroes” Raises $330,000 for Pediatric Cancer Research Over 500 People Attended Annual Luncheon Hosted by Chris Glavine Atlanta, GA, October 8, 2012 – CURE Childhood Cancer announces that its eighth annual “A Tribute to Quiet Heroes” luncheon, which was held on September 29, raised nearly $330,000 for pediatric cancer research. The event, which was attended by more than 540 people, including nearly 200 mothers of childhood cancer patients, has raised more than $2.5 million for pediatric cancer research since its inception in 2005. "This was our most successful luncheon to date, both in terms of fundraising and attendance,” said Kristin Connor, CURE’s executive director. “Not only were we able to raise critical funds to support pediatric cancer research, but we were able to honor and provide a day of respite to nearly 200 women who take care of their children with cancer so selflessly throughout the year. None of this would be possible without our generous sponsors and the leadership and dedication of Chris Glavine, her husband Tom, and the countless volunteers who made this day possible.” Since its inception, Quiet Heroes has honored more than 1,000 mothers for their courage, strength and determination. The event is hosted by Chris Glavine, wife of former Major League Baseball player Tom Glavine, who helped launch the inaugural event eight years ago. Emmy-award winning news anchor Jill Becker of 11Alive, herself the mother of a childhood cancer survivor, emceed, and the featured speaker was Alpharetta resident and cancer survivor Joshua Goodling. Diagnosed with terminal cancer at the age of four, Goodling was given just a week to live—that was more than forty-two years ago. A former senior web developer at WebMD and current director of web development at PGi here in Atlanta, Goodling travels frequently to speak at cancer events, conferences and seminars and numerous other events. Sponsors of this year’s event include the Glavine Family, Pepidped, Jack and Donna Kennedy, Sylvia and Pat Tylka, MedAssets, Incredible Southern Poundcakes, Copeland’s of New Orleans, Classic Cadillac, Affinity Bank, Aflac, E*Trade Financial, Muse Salon and Spa and Simply Buckhead.
