Compare and Contrast
Does William Shakespeare plays motivate or affect today’s movies? The answer to
this question is a yes. In this very day some producers take some idea of Shakespeare
plays and form it into a movie. So, Much ado about nothing is one of well known plays
that was written by William Shakespeare and Must love dogs is a movie filmed in two
thousand and five that was directed by Gary David. Shakespeare plays Much ado about
nothing is the play that Gary David took some ideas from it for the movie Must love
dogs. After reading and watching the play and the film of Much ado about nothing and
Must love dogs you can see the similarities and differences too.
The movie and the play there are a lot of characters. The heroes in both the movie and
the play are very different from each other, like in their looks and personalities. In Much
ado about nothing the hero in this play is Benedick and in Must love dogs the hero is
jack. The most dramatic character in the play will be Benedick. Benedick is such a
stubborn lord, he just returned from a war that undertakes that he will never marry and he
frequently acts for the benefit of others. At the beginning of the play he was a very nice
and very funny person, but when he falls in love he just becomes this other person being
rude and mean. When he met Beatrice his point of view changed. However, Jack is a wild
character and in someway he is funny. Jack is the most calm person and less dramatic
than Benedick is. Jack is interested in building and designing boats. Also, he falls in love

with a girl named Sarah but their relationship was very complicated. Beatrice and Sarah
are the heroines. The most main character of Shakespeare play will be Beatrice. Beatrice
rejects to marry because she has not discovered the perfect partner that is up to her
morals. Beatrice is a very pretty young girl, and when she fell in love with Benedick she
loves him with all of her heart. The heroine Sarah from Must love dogs, we can see that
she is a very attractive woman at age of forty who badly wants any man after her divorce.
Hero and Carol are the sub players. Carol is the sister of Sarah and she is bigger than her.
Carol is also a very gorgeous lady. Carol tries her best for her small sister Sarah to find
her perfect match. Carol secretly makes a profile of her sister on dating sites so that she
can find her right man. Hero is the cousin of Beatrice. Hero is very charming and
beautiful, who helps Benedick and Beatrice to fall in love with each other. As we can
understand that these two characters have lots of similarities. They both try to help their
beloved ones to fall in love.
Hence, in the play the common theme both have romance and drama. The
comedy in Much ado about nothing was when Hero and Ursula, where planning to tell
Beatrice that Benedick is in love with her, and when Claudia and the others tried to make
Benedick believe that Beatrice is in love with him. In the movie the comedy part was
when Sarah started dating all those men she found on the dating website. The men she
dated some was very funny and some were just weird. And the part when she found out
that one of her dates was actually her own father. That really made me laugh. In the play
the romantic part is Claudio opened his heart to Hero and told her that he is in love with
her and Hero fell in love with Claudio in that party night, even when Beatrice falls in love
with Benedick. In the movie, the romance part is when Sarah goes for Jack and tells him

how she feels and jumps into the river for him. Also, in the play of Shakespeare it had
lots of drama, like when Claudio believed that Don Pedro has betrayed him and pursued
Hero not for Claudio but for himself. In the movie the drama took place when dolly, by
accident a teenager fell in love with her, who stalks her and follows her from one place to
another, but then Sarah helped her and they convinced him to forget the whole thing and
disappear.
The plots is a bit different between the movie and the play. In the play the rising
action is when Claudia first falls in love with Hero. Plus, Beatrice and Benedick try hard
not to show anyone that there is something between them. In the opening act they already
fight and make fun of each other. Later on in the play, Don Pedro, Leonato and Claudio
makes Benedick overhear them saying that Beatrice is in love with him but she is too
embarrassed to let him know. However, Ursula and Hero makes Beatrice overhear the
conversation they had with Benedick and he admits that he is in love with her. Benedick
and Beatrice’s relationship progresses from hatred to falling in love with each other. At
the last scene Benedick kisses Beatrice. In the movie of Must love dogs which is
completely different, started when Carol made a profile on matching website for her
smaller sister Sarah and Sarah started to receive lots and lots of e-mails from the guys and
most of them were miserable. However, Sarah had a crush on a father of her student who
called bobbie. The climax was when, Jake was with Sarah having a good time but they
got interrupted with her drunk brother, so while Jack went to take Sarah’s brother home.
While Jack is taking him back home Bobbie came surprisingly and kissed Sarah which
Jack saw. She did not cared at all cause she thought that Bobbie was the right one for her.
Until, she found out that Bobbie cheated on her. When Sarah found out that Bobbie had

cheated on her she went back for Jack and explained to him herself, he was so
understanding and he gave her another chance.
Finally, the similarity in the movie is making the heros fall in love together. In
both the movie and the play there is always someone that nterferes and makes the
relationship go on and plans almost everything for them. This shows how Shakespear
plays are influence on the movies today.
