These low-power stations, transmitting on 1610 AM, are based in Elwood and Troy. VOLUNTARY EVACUATION IN EFFECT Due to the threat of flooding, local officials have asked residents of Elwood, eastern portions of Wathena and adjacent areas of Doniphan County to voluntarily evacuate. Residents who have chosen not to evacuate at this time should have belongings packed and be ready to evacuate on little or no notice. MANDATORY EVACUATION PLAN If local leaders decide that the situation has become unsafe and a mandatory evacuation is needed, the public will be notified in the following ways: Call-down phone system Storm sirens will sound Emergency vehicles will drive through the community sounding sirens and making announcement on their loudspeakers Local media announcements 1610 radio transmitters ACCESS TO EVACUATED AREAS Currently, access to all areas and businesses in the communities are open. If a mandatory evacuation is ordered, access to the area will be controlled. Residents will need to provide proof of residency (e.g. a driver license with a local address) to gain access back to their homes. Businesses should contact the command post to have ID cards issued to nonresident employees who may need to enter the area. ANIMAL SHELTERING AVAILABLE Evacuees who need to shelter their pets can contact the Atchison County Humane Society at (913) 367-3647. The animal shelter is open Monday thru Saturday. FEDERAL LEVEE STATUS The Federal Levee surrounding the community is being closely monitored by the US Army Corp of Engineers along with local levee officials and members of the Kansas National Guard. Sand boils have been treated at different locations along the levee by sandbagging. Please stay off the Federal Levee as it is a restricted area and trespassers will be prosecuted. Call (785) 989-3501. ELWOOD POST OFFICE The Elwood Post Office will continue to operate until a mandatory evacuation is ordered. WATHENA SEWAGE SERVICE Wathena sewage service is operating normally. City personnel are working closely with state officials to prevent any disruption of sewage service. COMMUNITY MEETINGS Elwood- 6:30 P.M. at the school gym on the 1st and 3rd Mondays and 2nd and 4th Tuesdays Wathena- Regular City Council Meetings on the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 7:00 P.M. INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM An Incident Management Team has been requested by Doniphan County to coordinate the response to the flood incident. The Incident Management Team is made up of disaster response experts from various public agencies throughout Kansas. FLOOD INSURANCE QUESTIONS? Regular transportation routes will continue unless US Highway 36 is closed to Saint Joseph, Missouri. FLOOD SAFETY TIPS Use caution on U.S. 36. There is increased traffic due to road closures both north and south of the area. Do Not Drive or Walk through High Water – Turn Around Don’t Drown Be aware of the heat, dress appropriately, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in the shade. If you feel dizzy, nauseated or experience vomiting you may have a heat injury and should seek immediate medical attention. Remember to check on your co-workers and neighbors. Heat effects pets too, make sure to provide them access to shade and fresh water. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES There are a number of opportunities for individuals wanting to volunteer to help the community. Volunteers should have current tetanus shots and dress appropriately for the work they are doing. If you are working with sandbags, wear boots, a hat, gloves, sunscreen and mosquito repellent.
