Whittier College APPLICATION PACKET Richard M. Nixon Fellowship Program Whittier College is proud to be one of the few colleges to have educated a President of the United States. In honor of this distinction and with the generous support of friends, Whittier has established the Richard M. Nixon Fellowship Program. The purpose of the Whittier College Nixon Fellowship Program is to promote civic responsibility, develop leadership potential, advance informed public policy analysis, and encourage public service. Through a competitive award process, talented Whittier students will have the opportunity to pursue a year of focused learnin g that will include an internship and may also feature research, international study, travel, or professional development. The Fellowship will afford a student the opportunity to enhance his or her liberal education and major coursework. Fellows will find opportunities to learn both the possibilities and challenges inherent in professional life and develop a fuller understanding of President Nixon’s complex legacy, including his many accomplishments. The 2013-2014 Nixon Fellow One Whittier College student will be selected to be the 2013-2014 Nixon Fellow and engage in a self-designed program of focused learning and applied experience. The Nixon Fellow will receive a $5,000 stipend toward the completion of an internship experience and his/her project(s) during the year. The funds for the Nixon Fellowship Program are made available through gifts from friends and alumni of Whittier College. Who is eligible? The Nixon Fellowship Program seeks students who are currently Whittier freshmen, sophomores or juniors Students must have a graduation date of May 2014 or later At the time of application, students must have a 3.2 or higher cumulative GPA. Applicants must be in good academic and social standing at the time of application (cannot have any active Student Life sanctions) Application & Selection Procedures A complete application will include: A completed 2013-2014 Nixon Fellowship Program Application form (attached) A Learning Proposal following the prescribed format (attached) A copy of your unofficial academic transcript A copy of your current resume Application Deadline: 5:00 pm, Friday, March 8, 2013. A faculty committee will review all application materials and select the Fellow. The proposal must make a connection between an element or accomplishment of the Nixon administration and what the student would like to learn and experience during the Fellowship year. Cover Page – 1 page Your name The title of your proposal Completed Nixon Fellowship Program Application Form Includes the name of a faculty advisor/mentor who is aware of your proposal topic and who can attest to your academic and personal qualities that will be needed to accomplish a one-year, self-directed learning plan Narrative – 4-8 pages Please incorporate the following elements: Your motivation for the learning plan you are proposing Evidence of having conducted research related to the Nixon administration Identification of an element or accomplishment of the Nixon administration that connects to an area of interest you want to explore during the fellowship year How you propose to gain the knowledge and experience that you seek - the resources, experiences and opportunities that will be the integral components of your year-long plan for learning One element must be an internship. It could be during the summer or during the academic year. Describe what that internship may be, when you plan to do the internship and how you plan to acquire the internship position. You will be expected to earn academic credit for your internship. You may discuss options for academic credit with Linda Ross or your advisor. Describe the other elements you will undertake in order to learn/explore your topic of interest. These can be things such as, research, reading, correspondence, travel, meetings, interviews, conferences, workshops, etc. These will be in addition to your Whittier coursework. How being a Nixon Fellow and undertaking this one-year, self-directed learning experience will complement your Whittier College education How you would like to share your Nixon Fellowship experience with the Whittier College community – either throughout the year, at the conclusion or both.
