* The Deccan Plateau is surrounded by the western coastal plain and the eastern coastal plain.
The two coastal plains meet at Kannyakumari.

1. What is the average width of the coastal plain?
Average width of the coastal plain is about 6000km from Gujarat in the west up to West Bengal
in the east.
2. What is the capital city of Lakshadweep?
Kavaratti is the capital city of Lakshadweep.
3. Name the parts into which the western coastal plain and the eastern coastal plain are
divided.
The Eastern Coastal plain is divided into two parts. The northern part is known as the northern
Circars. The Southern part is called the Coromandel Coast. The western coastal plain is divided
into three parts – the Gujarat Coast, The Konkan Coast and the Malabar Coast.
4. Where is cellular Jail? Why is it a national monument?
The Cellular Jail is in Port Blair. It is a very famous national monument because when India was
ruled by the British, many Indian freedom fighters were kept in this jail.
5. What is the importance of Bombay High?
This port is rich in oil deposits. Large deposits of petroleum have been found in the sea bed
near Mumbai. This region is called Bombay high.

Point out where western and eastern plains are located on a map of India. Point out
Kannyakumari, Indira point and the Islands.
Project: Collect information and pictures on the life style of the people in the Malabar Coast
and stick the pictures of the major tourist attracted places on the coastal plains.
