PROJECT INDEPENDENCE CHOSEN TO PROVIDE ON-SITE SOCIAL SERVICES FOR NEW HOUSING DEVELOPMENT COSTA MESA, CA (April 15, 2013) — Eight years ago, work began on a dream to develop affordable housing for people with developmental disabilities in Orange County. On June 1st, 2013 the first tenants will begin moving in. Vista Del Rio is a 41-unit, new construction project that will provide developmentally and physically disabled adults with high quality affordable housing with modern amenities and on-site services. Since ground breaking on May 3rd, 2012, much has been accomplished at Vista del Rio. At 1600 West Memory Lane, Santa Ana, the property is south of the Outlets of Orange (formerly The Block) and overlooks the Santa Ana River- right on the golf course. Vista Del Rio is designed to serve those with disabilities by providing high-quality affordable housing with modern amenities and on-site services provided by Project Independence. Built in the craftsman architectural design, the building features studios, and 1- and 2- bedroom apartments offering contemporary living for tenants, with balconies overlooking the site or courtyard, storage space, and modern kitchens and bathrooms. It’s really very beautiful with attention to detail and solid construction. Project Independence was invited to participate in this project because of their 35 years of exemplary work providing Independent Living, Day and Behavioral Supports and Supported Employment to the Orange County Community. “When Community Housing Resources asked us to participate, based on our reputation for excellence, we were excited to be a part of the project,” stated Debra Marsteller, Executive Director. To provide the most convenient living environment for tenants, all kitchens are handicap accessible and have garbage disposals, dishwashers and other amenities. The appliances will be energy-efficient models to further reduce costs for tenants. The building is served with large walkways and courtyards featuring a central gathering area with fountain, picnic tables and seating for tenants. Services for tenants will include social service programs designed to increase or maintain the independence of tenants with disabilities. Training programs will focus on independent/support living training, vocational services and healthy living. Vista Del Rio will be built to exceed Title 24 energy standards and to LEED Silver certified standards. The building includes environmentally sensitive “green” building materials and standards. The developer, A Community of Friends, is a Los Angeles based nonprofit with 38 award winning projects serving homeless and mentally ill. www.accof.org provides more details on this wonderful organization. Community Housing Resources, CHRI, is the service coordinator and will screen applicants and will be the liaison for supports services at VDR - www.chrioc.org. Their primary function is to provide housing options for people with developmental disabilities in Orange County. Project Independence is grateful to be invited to participate. Years of work proceeded to make this dream a reality and we look forward to expanding the dream for years to come ### About Project Independence Project Independence’s mission is to promote civil rights for people with developmental disabilities through services which expand independence and choice.
