Heredity Monster Project You have learned about many different heredity patterns. Some patterns are simple and show two alleles, the Mendelian traits, while others are more complex and display multiple alleles such as incomplete dominance or codominant traits. To coincide with our chapter on heredity, you will create traits for a mother and father monster and use Punnett squares to determine the possible phenotypes for the offspring. Similar to our activity in class with the doohickey bug, you will flip a coin twice to determine the genotype for the mother and father and record it in a data table like the one shown on the next page. If the coin shows heads up, this will dictate the trait for allele 1; if the coin shows tails up, this will dictate the trait for allele 2. Once the genotype for each of the twelve traits is created, determine the phenotype resulting from the allele pair. After you have all the genotypes and corresponding phenotypes for the mother and father monsters, use the genotype for each trait to create a Punnett square. You will have one Punnett Square per trait. You can either neatly hand-draw each Punnett Squares or recreate them on the computer. Choose one of the allele pair combinations for the offspring and fill in another genotype/phenotype table. Upon completing the offspring table, draw each of your three monsters, the mother, father, and offspring, so each monster shows the traits that corresponds to the genotype/phenotype table. All three monster drawings and their corresponding tables must appear on the same “poster” (11” x 18” construction paper). The construction paper will be provided to you in class. You will be given one day in class to begin your project in which you will flip a coin for each of the Mendelian traits. The final project will be due on Friday, February 20th. Five points will be deducted each day the project is late. This project will count as a test grade and will be broken up into to following categories: Accuracy of genotype/phenotype tables Accuracy of Punnett Squares Monster drawings Neatness: Spelling: Total Points: (15 points) (60 points) (10 points) (10 points) (5 points) 100 Points Mother, Father, & Offspring Table Trait Allele 1 Allele 2 Genotype Phenotype Eye Two small eyes (E) One large eye (e) Eye Color (incomplete) Red (R) White (R’) Skin Color (codominant) Green (G) Blue (B) Tail Shape Curly (C) Straight (c) Tail Color Purple (P) Orange (p) Tail Have tail (T) No tail (t) (regulatory gene) Teeth Sharp (S) Round (s) Feet (incomplete) Four toes (F) Two toes (F’) Horn Color Purple (W) White (w) Ear shape Pointy (Y) Round (y) Ears (regulatory) No ears (N) Two ears (n) Claws Long (L) Short (l) Name: ________________________ Class: _________ Date: _____________ Name: ________________________ Class: _________ Date: _____________ Project on time: ____ Y ____ N ( ___ days late x 5 = loss of _____ points) Project on time: ____ Y ____ N ( ___ days late x 5 = loss of _____ points) Heredity Monster Project Rubric Area Strong Proficient Genotype/ phenotype tables (15 points) N/A All three tables are complete and accurate.
