Course Objectives: The purpose of this course is to provide a basic understanding of psychology, the study of the brain and human behavior, as well as how psychologists study humans. This course provides an overview of topics in all areas of psychology including but not limited to: genes and behavior, human intelligence, attitudes, social development and mental disorders.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
Understand the major theories of psychology & discoveries in the various fields of study
Understand the research methods used by psychologists
Understand how to think critically about the conclusions made by psychologists and researchers
Apply ideas from psychology to their own life experiences
Be better prepared to adapt to the rigors of college learning with the skills to succeed in college
Supplies:
3-ring binder (mandatory) with 5 divider pages (sometimes referred to a “tabs”)
Pen, pencil & paper every day

Classroom Rules:
Students will be in their assigned seats when the bell rings, with all required materials and remain in seats unless directed otherwise—NEVER line up at the door
Students will be respectful during class discussions
Students are expected to take notes during lectures
Students will not use i-pods, cell-phones or other electronic devices during the class period
Students are expected to be awake and participating every day
Participation
All students are expected to participate in class activities, discussions, demonstrations, and all group projects.
Students will receive a participation grade. Students will lose points from participation for the following reasons and they are not debatable:
Unexcused absences
Tardies
Using cell phones
Doing homework for other classes
Sleeping
You are expected to have all materials with you every day, including your own pens, pencils and paper. You will be allowed restroom passes but please be respectful when you ask—try not to interrupt lectures or other important activities during the hour. Do not ask for passes during class when it is passing time for other lunch hours. You must have a Lanyard + student identification.
