TELPAS Writing Collection Calendar
*The suggested dates are a recommendation of what week teachers should complete
the sample. (ex: The math sample can be collected the week of February 15-19.) The
suggested dates (ex: February 17th) are not intended to be the actual writing collection
date.
Reminders:
1. Samples may continue to be gathered until the time raters are required to turn in
students’ rating to the campus coordinator.
2. Inter-rater reliability (team of raters) is highly encouraged to ensure objective ratings.
3. Teachers shall use the proficiency level descriptors (PLDs) rubric to rate each set of samples
4. TELPAS samples become secured documents after:
 the teacher has selected the samples to be rated, submitted as the “official” set to
the verifier, and
 the teacher places and staples the cover sheet on the writing collection.
5. Samples must be verified before they can be rated.
6. Collect samples from authentic classroom activities that are grounded in the content
area TEKS and ELPS.
7. Assemble writing collections that accurately reflect students’ overall ability to express
themselves in writing in English.
8. Choose writing samples that reflect the student’s proficiency level, and avoid samples
that interfere with the ability to rate the student effectively.
Select writing samples taken from authentic classroom activities that are
grounded in content area TEKS and ELPS
