(ex: The math sample can be collected the week of February 15-19.) The suggested dates (ex: February 17th) are not intended to be the actual writing collection date. Reminders: 1. Samples may continue to be gathered until the time raters are required to turn in students’ rating to the campus coordinator. 2. Inter-rater reliability (team of raters) is highly encouraged to ensure objective ratings. 3. Teachers shall use the proficiency level descriptors (PLDs) rubric to rate each set of samples 4. TELPAS samples become secured documents after: the teacher has selected the samples to be rated, submitted as the “official” set to the verifier, and the teacher places and staples the cover sheet on the writing collection. 5. Samples must be verified before they can be rated. 6. Collect samples from authentic classroom activities that are grounded in the content area TEKS and ELPS. 7. Assemble writing collections that accurately reflect students’ overall ability to express themselves in writing in English. 8. Choose writing samples that reflect the student’s proficiency level, and avoid samples that interfere with the ability to rate the student effectively. Select writing samples taken from authentic classroom activities that are grounded in content area TEKS and ELPS TELPAS writing collection should… a. Include 3 samples for K-1 and 5 samples for 2-12th based on required types b. be authentic writing supportive of classroom instructional practices c. be written completely or primarily in English d. be rated as a collection (Holistic rating) e. have student’s first and last name f. be dated g. come on or after February 15, 2016 What NOT to include in the TELPAS writing collection: a. copied assignments b. writing show teacher corrections c. writing revised and edited by either teacher or peer d. writing written in student’s primary language e. worksheets f. question-answer responses g. brief or rushed writing Please refer to your Administrators’ Manual for specific directions.
