Hi Sharon
I used cheap shaving cream, rubbing it on the face of the stone with my hand. The shaving cream goes
into each indentation, which makes the inscriptions more visible. Some chemists warn about the
damage that shaving cream chemicals could have on the stones. But I agree with most genealogists,
who consider the recovery of the stones' messages more valuable than keeping an illegible stone
illegible. Anyway, the next rainfall will clean the stone after I walk away.
Maybe it's more than you wanted to know, but my Campbell line is as follows:
Christopher Campbell (my GrGrGrGrandfather), born in OH - I only know his name from the death
certificate of son Elliot. In Census records, Elliot consistantly reported "OH" as the place of birth for both
of his parents. Elliot's death certiificate identified his mother's name as "UNKNOWN".
Elliot Campbell (my GrGrGrandfather) was born 25 Sep 1830 in OH. There are three "Elliot Campbell's"
in OH for the 1850 Census, but none of them match exactly with what I know of him. He was married
(by James Martin) to Zilpha Cynthia Powell on 26 Mar 1854 in Kosciusko County, Indiana. Zilpha was
daughter of Isaac Powell (16 May 1811 in Fairfield County OH - 08 Mar 1866 in Kosciusko County IN) and
Elizabeth Tipton/Anglin (abt. 1811 in OH - 03 May 1876 in Kosciusko County IN). I haven't yet found the
1860 Census record for the family of Elliot and Zilpha Campbell. By 1860, they already had three
children; Isaac (abt. 1855), Evaline (abt. 1857), and Angeline (abt. 1859). All of their children were born
in Indiana. In the 1860's, three more children were born; Christopher W (Jan 1863), Elizabeth (abt.
1865), and Rebecca Jane (25 Feb 1867). On 1 Jun 1870 (the 1870 Census date), the family lived in Prairie
Township, Kosciusko County, IN. Four more children were added to the family in the 1870's; Isabella (28
Jun 1871), Susan Ada (Mar 1874), Ira Campbell (abt. 1877), and Zed Isah (29 Dec 1879). For the next
Censuses (01 June 1880, 01 Jun 1900, and 15 Apr 1910), the family still resided in Prairie Township,
Kosciusko County, Indiana. The 1910 Census lists Elliot as "George E. Campbell". I don't have anything
else that associates "George" with his name. For the 01 Jan 1920 Census, aged Elliot and Zilpha had
moved to Harrison Township, Kosciusko County, Indiana. Zilpha died 6 Jan 1922 at their home in
Atwood IN. At least eight of her children were living at that time. Elliot died a few days later, on 25 Jan
1922 at Susan Ada (Campbell) Nine's house (his daughter). Elliot and Zilpha were buried next to each
other in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, Kosciusko County, Indiana.
Zed Isah Campbell (my GrGrandfather) was born 29 Dec 1879 in Atwood, Kosciusko County, Indiana. He
was married 14 Dec 1901 in Marshall County Indiana (by Justice of the Peace J. J. Vangundy) to Lura Bell
Martin. Lura was born 22 Feb 1881 in Tippecanoe, Marshall County, Indiana to George Martin (02 Sep
1843 in Piqua, Miami County, OH ... a twin of Margaret Martin - 1920 probably in Pierceton, Kosciusko
County, IN) and Albina Severns (18 Aug 1861 in Tippecanoe, Marshall County, Indiana - 26 Nov 1950 in
Warsaw, Kosciusco County, Indiana). Zed and Lura had twin boys Roy and Hoy born 18 Dec 1902 in
Atwood, Kosciusco County, IN. On 15 Apr 1910, the family was living in Williston, Williams County,
North Dakota, having moved there to find work. Elsie (09 Apr 1915 - 13 Feb 2000), their only other
child, was born in Willston ND. On Jan 1, 1920, the family was living in Lacon, Marshall County, Illinois.
Lura died 12 Mar 1930 in Washington Township, Kosciusko County, Indiana and was buried in Sidney,
Kosciusko County, Indiana. On April 1, 1930, Zed was living in German Township, St. Joseph County,
Indiana with son Hoy and daughter Elsie. Roy, Hoy's twin, had already married and was living in the
same Township. Zed married three other times without additional children born to those marriages. On
05 Apr 1838, he married Mary (Miller)Buchanan in St. Joseph County, Indiana. She died in May 1939.
On 05 Oct 1943, his St. Joseph County Indiana marriage license was granted to marry Mamie (Wykoff)
Wilson. She died 17 Apr 1949 in Daytona Beach, Florida. In October 1950, Zed married Evelyn (Sheldon)
Robison, probably in St. Joseph County, Indiana. Evelyn also preceeded Zed in death on 11 May 1964.
Zed died at Daytona Manor Nursing Home in South Daytona, Velusia County, Florida. Zed was buried
next to his 4th wife Evelyn at St. Joseph Memorial Garden, Mishawaka, St. Joseph County, Indiana.
Roy Campbell (my Grandfather) was born 18 Dec 1902 in Atwood, Kosciusco County, IN. He was married
29 Aug 1925 in St. Joseph County, Indiana (by Cecil Franklin) to Mary Edith Piety. Mary was born 27 Jan
1907 in Wills Point, Myrtle Springs Township, Van Zandt County, Texas to Zadoc John and Ora Frances
(Watson) Piety ... whom you know. On 01 Apr 1930, Roy and Mary were living with their daughter
Thelma (my mother) in German Township, St. Joseph County, IN. They had two other children after
1930; Warren Richard and Marilyn Joy Campbell. They were active in the Calvert & Caroline
congregation of the church of Christ until they left to work with the Donmoyer Avenue congregation at
its beginning. Roy served as a deacon for Donmoyer Avenue until they moved to LaGrange, IN in the
late 1970's. Roy died 18 Sep 1981 in Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home, LaGrange, Indiana. Mary also
died at the same Nursing Home on 26 Dec 1993. Mary was buried next to Roy at Greenfield Cemetery,
LaGrange, LaGrange County, Indiana. - By the way, my mother is now residing at Miller's Merry Manor
Nusing Home.
