Date of conclusion of last sabbatical leave: Page 2 of 7 UNIVERSITY OF THE FRASER VALLEY Faculty Sabbatical Leave Application Form TYPE OF LEAVE REQUESTED All Type B Faculty whether full-time or part-time at UFV are eligible to apply for a sabbatical leave after seven (7) years of continuous service. A sabbatical leave provides an extended time for faculty to engage in a program of research or other appropriate scholarly activity, an opportunity to upgrade professional skills, acquire new competencies or credentials, or engage in approved teaching and learning activities, including course or curriculum development where the focus of such work is the scholarly/professional development of the individual faculty member. Under the Collective Agreement, approvable sabbatical leaves must fit into one of the following six streams: Research Project, Scholarly Activity Project, Teaching and Learning Project, Curriculum Development, Course or Training Program, Completion of Requirements for New Credentials. Please indicate below which stream your proposed project is best represented by. For a description of each stream, please reference the Faculty Sabbatical Leave Application Handbook. June - September Application preparation: the applicant must begin to prepare their application well in advance of the final deadline. 2. September Department Feedback: To enable review and feedback from the department members, the applicant must submit the application to the department head / director sufficiently in advance of the date of the September department meeting. 3. September 30 Department head / director feedback: Following departmental review, but not later than September 30, the department head / director will prepare a summary of the feedback and send the summary together with the draft proposal to the applicant AND to the Dean. 4. October 15 Dean’s initial review and advice: As early as possible, but not later than October 15, the dean will provide initial advice to the applicant on strengthening the draft proposal, so that the applicant may consider revising the proposal. The advice may be provided in writing or in person at a meeting of the dean and the applicant. 5. October 30 Dean’s formal review: As early as possible, but not later than October 30 the applicant will submit a full application package to the Dean for formal review. The dean will provide written comments to the applicant which will form part of the final application package. 6. November 30 Submission of Finalized Applications: The final date on which applications will be accepted is November 30. Complete and final applications (including the Dean’s comments) must be submitted to Research, Engagement, & Graduate Studies and to Human Resources on or before this date. APPLICATION AND CRITERIA A sabbatical application must satisfactorily fulfil all of the criteria listed below: 1. Represent an equivalent time commitment to the regular duties from which the faculty member is being released. 2. Contribute to the professional development of the faculty member. 3. Demonstrate that the project is an appropriate logical extension of the faculty member’s current intellectual background and contributes to the faculty member’s advancement in relevant professional areas. 4. Provide evidence that sufficient preparation will have been undertaken by the time the faculty member begins this project. 5. Be of value to the institution, the community and be clearly related to our strategic goals. http://www.ufv.ca/president/ufv_strategic_directions/ 6. Clearly describe the expected outcome on completion of the project, a time frame for the project, and information on the tangible form this outcome is expected to take (e.g. paper, report, presentation, new curriculum, evaluation report). Page 4 of 7 UNIVERSITY OF THE FRASER VALLEY Faculty Sabbatical Leave Application Form Referring to the criteria from above, please consider and ensure that you have addressed the following in preparing your proposal: 1. Applications must include a clear and concise statement (approximately 150 words) of the relevance, purpose and value of the project. This statement will be entered into the searchable on-line database of faculty sabbaticals so that you and others can identify relevant and comparable projects. 2. Applications must provide sufficient detailed information to enable the adjudication committee to assess the proposal, and to assist the adjudication committee in developing advice on developing acceptable projects, where required. Please include all of the following information: a. Objectives of the proposed project b. Project design of the proposed project (methods) c. Project activities to be conducted during the leave period (provide a timeline for the year that you are taking – September to August or January to December) d. Project significance and its relation to your current research, scholarship, teaching and learning e. Work already completed and in progress, activities you have undertaken in the last year to prepare you for your sabbatical leave f. Why your sabbatical will be successful g. Outcomes of the proposed project h. How you, your department, UFV, and the community will benefit should your project be supported i. Dissemination of your project outcomes j. Any other considerations. 3. A copy of the Sabbatical Final Report of your most recent sabbatical, if applicable. 4. A current curriculum vitae. 5. Department Head and Dean comments. The Sabbatical Review Subcommittee is a subcommittee of the JPDC. The department head must attach a summary of departmental review and feedback to the proposal before forwarding it to the applicant and to the dean no later than September 30. While the summary should take into account all established criteria for a satisfactory proposal (please refer to page 3 of application for criteria), it must include specific reference to criteria 2, 3 and 5. Please refer to page X of application for criteria. The advice may be provided in writing or in person at a meeting of the dean and the applicant. The applicant will consider these comments prior to submitting a finalized application package to the dean for formal review.
