Introduction to Merchandising

Merchandising is the backbone of retail establishments. Following the corporate guidelines and plans for placing the product is essential to increase business and sales within the stores.

By having an organized space within the retail environment, customers are more likely to make a purchase. This ease of shopping helps satisfy the customers’ needs.

As mentioned above, there are many guidelines to follow in order to successfully merchandise a department of a store. This manual will focus on the men’s department of Macy’s and the various ways in which associates can keep it up to the company’s standards.

Dress Shirts

When merchandising dress shirts, there some basic rules to placement:

 Remove plastic covering, fold and insert inside of shirt

 Separate by vendor

 Size small to large beginning at the top

 Colors on tables or shelves should go from light to dark

It is also worth mentioning that there is a maximum amount allowed on the dress shirt tables. The top table should have no more than eight shirts. The bottom tables, on the other hand, should be stacked no higher than six shirts.

The stack should start with a shirt collar facing toward the aisle and then the shirts above that are alternated to keep the stack balanced. The last three shirts on top should also be facing up. This helps prop up the shirt for better presentation.

There should also be ties on top of the shirts which coordinate in color.

The brands of the ties do not matter. Place a tie on every shirt on the top table except the two shirts on each end.

Once the holiday season starts, there will also be cubes available underneath the tables to allow for the extra stock that comes in during this time. Although they need to be stacked neatly, they are allowed to be less organized by color since they will be moved up to the table shortly.

Once the dress shirts are finished, the end result should look something like the picture below:

Ties and Belts

Ties are usually placed an either a round or rectangular table. There is a color wheel in place to give them some organization. They are typically set one top of another, in a repeated pattern around the table. Make sure the tags are tucked underneath the ties.

Unlike the dress shirt table, there are no stated maximum amounts for what can fit on tie tables. Merchandisers can keep adding until there is no more room. Be warned however, that the more ties that are squeezed onto a table, the more easily it can be messed up when during big sales. Customers are not quite as gentle with moving these items as associates are.

In some cases, there may also be a tie rack above the table showcasing some of the newer or different ties. These should also be arranged by color.

Belts, having the waist size listed on the tags, are hung in numerical order. Make sure to separate each brand by the different style. Each style should be represented on its own separate hook.

Suits

Along with Men’s Collections, suits are a part of the store’s numerous high dollar products. The following guidelines apply when merchandising suits:

 Suits and pants are taken off rods and separated by brand

 Jackets are hung in this order: short, regular, and long

 All pants are edged to equal length on hangers

 All suit jackets and dress pants are tagged with sensors

Also, as with other sections, any clearance jackets and pants are to stay on clearance racks together. They are not to be mixed with casual style clothing.

Macy’s also carries a variety of active wear brands for consumers.

Whether its track jackets or sweat pants and shirts, each one typically have their own rules for placement as long as room allows. The following standards apply:

 Hooded Sweatshirts, sweat pants, and t-shirts are always folded and displayed on tables

 Track jackets and pants are always hung

 Each style is sized from small to the largest size carried

 Colors are arranged light to dark (left to right or front to back)

 Except for Nike and Adidas, anything over $35.00 is tagged with sensor

Excess amounts of products from the tables can be hung on stands or on the back wall.

Sportswear

The sportswear department offers a more fashionable clothing style for sports. When merchandising these clothes:

 Short sleeve shirts are generally folded down on tables

 Long sleeve shirts are left hanging

 Jackets and pants are always hung

 Each style is sized from small to the largest size carried

 Colors are arranged light to dark (left to right or front to back)

 For this section, anything over $75.00 is tagged with a sensor

Excess amounts of products from the tables can be hung on stands or on the back wall as well.

Men’s Collections

Finally, there are the men’s collections. These are the premier brands carried in the stores. These areas offer both casual and formal wear selections and comprise a large amount of the net profit for stores.

Since they are popular and expensive name brands, they are also unfortunately the targets of most shoplifters. Due to this, extra security precautions are taken to keep thieves from getting away with these products.

 Everything above $35 is tagged in these areas

 In the Polo section, ink tags are used

 Allow for extra space on back walls when hanging shirts

 Clothing from these brands must be moved to clearance racks within the Men’s Collection area

Chapter 3: Signing

Signing

Setting Sales

15

As a retail establishment, sales happen often. When they do happen, associates need to be prepared to put in the time to do it right. If signed correctly, products sale better because there is less confusion for the customer. When it comes to signing, the following is essential in completing the process accurately:

 Make sure the scan gun is set to the day of sale

 Scan every item of a different style

 Scan every fixture in each section

 If the price or percentage is an odd amount, round up

 Place magnet sign on the right side of fixture facing aisle

 Place large signs on the left side of the table facing the aisle within areas

Conclusion

Once all of these tasks have been met, the store is finally ready to be shopped. When all the guidelines are followed, it makes store recovery much easier on all associates.

Although some of these rules may seem like a waste of time, if followed, they benefit both the company and the workers.
