A few thoughts before you sign up for Stumpy’s Capital Punishment Is Expensive and Inefficient: o Trying a death penalty case (before appeals!) is at least 10 times more costly than trying the same crime without the death penalty. o Death penalty cases take 17 vs 3.5 days for jury selection, 36 vs less than 7 days for trial, 53 vs 5 days of judge’s work days compared to comparable non-death penalty cases. o Capital punishment is a bloated government program – are you surprised? Capital Punishment Fails Victims: o Families are promised an execution, but the penalty is seldom imposed. Even less often is the sentence carried out, and in all cases subsequent executions are carried out only after years of anguish as families endlessly relive the worst event of the lives in uncountable legal hearings. Fails to Improve Public Safety: o For every study that demonstrates the effectiveness of capital punishment in deterring certain crimes, there is another that demonstrates the opposite. Brilliant minds working for years have been unable to show a robust relationship either way. Common sense: Any deterrence effect is weak. Given the first bullet above, we should just stop. o Review bullet two above. Excessive resources spent on trying capital cases cannot be used to combat any other crime, repair bridges, pay firemen, or improve public safety in any other way. Capital Punishment Is Gross Government Intrusion: o A government that can kill its own citizens can justify anything, given sufficient time and motive. o “How would you feel if your wife/son/daughter…?” You know that the government is not responsible for your happiness, giving you a job, solving all of your problems, promising all things to all people. So why should we demand the government be responsible for exacting our personal revenge on murderers?
