Diffraction and Interference

Abstract: This experiment focuses on the confirmation of a wavelength of a red diode laser through the use of either a single slit or double slit diffraction pattern and recording the intensity values at each bright spot. Once confirmed the values of the angles of each bright spot and the fraction of percent max intensity are plotted together in a graph to compare with the theoretical value for such a diffraction curve. With an experimental laser wavelength of 650nm we calculated our wavelength to be between 642.909 nm +/-

80.73nm to 689.553nm +/- 89.21nm. Both of these values and their error ranges show that our calculation for the wavelength was correct. Our intensity vs. angle graphs in the end of the experiment is also very close to the theoretical curve for a diffraction curve.

I. Introduction

A diffraction and Interference pattern occurs when light waves of a single wavelength pass through a slit

(single or double) and make contact with a screen. This light produces a series of bright spots of varying intensity and is separated by dark areas. This is known as a diffraction pattern and occurs because light that d destructive interference (dark spots). The more slits that are added the more complicated the pattern becomes on the screen due to the interference of all the lights passing through the different slits. Our main purpose of this experiment is to gather light intensity data and use it to confirm the wavelength of our laser which in this experiment is 650nm and to compare our intensity values with a theoretical curve for the diffraction pattern. To do this we shine a laser through a single slit and double slit and observe the dotted line that appears on the screen. This dotted line is formed by the laser being diffracted (angled) away from its initial line of action. When the diffracted light comes in phase with another diffracted light from the laser it produces a bright spot, or dot, in the dotted line. When a diffracted light meets another light that is exactly opposite of its phase (a distance of Pi for the wavelength) then the lights will cause destructive interference with each other producing a dark spot on the line. From this interference patter we can make use of light sensory equipment in order to determine the intensity of each bright spot, the angle in which the light is being diffracted, and ultimately the wavelength of the light source. In order to determine the wavelength of our laser we must take our slit width, a, multiply it by the sine of our angle, 𝜃 , and divide that value by the integer peak value away from the max peak value, m. For example, the brightest peak will have an m value of zero where as the adjacent peak on either side of the max peak will have an m value of

1, then 2, etc [2]. 𝑚𝜆 = a sin (𝜃) , m = 0, ± 1, ± 2, ..., ± integer (1)

Even before we can calculate our wavelength we must determine our angle using equation (2) below. 𝑡𝑎𝑛 −1 ( 𝑑

Once our angles and wavelengths have been calculated we use our intensity values from the 5 peaks of our single slit and the 11 peaks for the double slit and determine our percentage of the max intensity for each set. These values along with our angle values can be plotted on a graph to show a wave function that should look similar to that of our intensity vs. time graphs [2].

II. Experimental Setup

In the Diffraction and Interference experiment there is only a small amount of equipment necessary in order to complete the experiment. This equipment includes: a laser, single and double slits with opening of 0.04 mm, a small stand to elevate the slits in line with the laser, a lab railing in order to place the light sensor and motion sensor in line with the laser, and a computer operating with the program known as Data Studio.

The laser and the light sensor are separated on a flat surface by a distance labeled as L and the laser is diffracted at various angles, 𝜃 . In order to gather light intensity data about each interference pattern you must eliminate any other light entering the light sensor by gathering data in the dark. When collecting data the light sensor must be moved manually across the interference pattern at a constant and steady pace in order to receive good graphs where you can distinguish each and every peak easily. The light sensor retrieves data and plots it on a graph of Intensity vs. time whereas the motion sensor plots data of position vs. time.

III. Results

We gathered two data runs of each single slit and double slit using Data Studio in which it automatically plotted the data in graphs of Position vs. Time and Intensity vs. Time. See figures 2-5 below.

As you can see our first run took place much quicker than our second run. This is because we discovered that if we took data slower we would come up with a clearer picture of our intensity peaks in our intensity vs. time graphs.

The blue set of data is still very good but a little compressed together making it slightly more difficult to count the 5 peaks necessary for a single slit diffraction pattern. Run number two is much more spread out and easier to read.

This image shows a very steady and smooth movement of the light sensor as it moved across the diffraction pattern. Data was taken much slower in these cases in order to capture at least 11 peaks in our intensity vs. time graphs.

For the double slit data the location of all 11 peaks proved to be much more difficult than the single slit data but was achievable. Many of the outer peaks are quite small and difficult to detect until we zoomed into the image. Using this data for both single and double slits we produced an excel sheet containing only the data points necessary to calculate the wavelength. Single slit data includes data of five most intense data peaks whereas double slit contains 11 peaks. The data is listed below.

There may seem like an excessive amount of data above but all of these points are necessary in order to calculate the wavelength using the single slit and also to plot our intensity verses angle graphs. The calculated wavelength values in the single slit data came out to be very close to our actual laser wavelength value of 650nm. Our wavelength values ranged from 642.909 nm +/- 80.73nm to 689.553nm +/- 89.21nm.

Both values lie within range of our true value. Error was a big part of this experiment as well. Our estimated errors, including the error in length L and the error in our motion of our light sensor, were just values that we could best estimate for each measurement. For the error in length L we recorded the smallest measurement that we could see which half of a millimeter or 0.0005m. We estimated the same error in the measurement of the position of the light sensor even though it was measured through the computer rather than by a meter stick. Our last estimated error was the error in our slit width of 0.00004m.

This error was estimated at 0.000005m. Any other values that were calculated have errors that had to be propagated. This was done using the propagation equation on page 75 of our Error Analysis book [1]. Our resulting errors through propagation came out to be very good and showed that our recorded data values were very good as well. Our Intensity vs. Angle graphs were then produced to compare with theoretical curve.

IV. Discussion

Based on are data our calculations for our wavelength have shown to be very favorable. Our calculated wavelength of 642.909 nm +/- 80.73nm to 689.553nm +/- 89.21nm lies within the range of our true wavelength value of 650nm. With our wavelength calculated we were able to plot our fraction intensity vs. angle from central peak which is represented in figures 10-13. In figures 10 and 11 our data points represent our single slit diffraction pattern that was measured using the light sensor and our calculated angles. A theoretical line was calculated using equation (3) in order to compare our data points to see if it matched correctly. Figures 12 and 13 show the same thing but instead for a double slit diffraction pattern.

Our theoretical line matches figures 10 and 11 very well proving our data is accurate. For figures 12 and

13 the theoretical line seems to be very close but doesn’t exactly match our data sets. Even though the line doesn’t quite match most of the line falls within the error bars of the angle showing that our data is still acceptable. Overall the purpose of confirming the wavelength of the red diode laser and plotting the intensity vs. time graphs with a theoretical curve proved to be a success.
