Minutes The minutes of the meeting of the Board held on 18 November 2013 were confirmed. 2. PART I - FOR REPORT TO SENATE: There was no business to report. 3. PART II - FOR REPORT TO THE BOARDS OF STUDIES: The Board Approved: A for submission to the Board of Undergraduate Studies proposals to: (i) amend the Anatomy sections of Science Schedules A, B and D; (ii) introduce BIOA 101 (Introduction to Biological Anthropology), subject to: a. b. c. d. considering changing the title of BIOA 301; amending the workload hours to total 180; clarifying the alignment of the internal assessment with the noncontact hours; consulting with the Department of Zoology. Some concern was expressed regarding the offering of another 100-level Biology-related paper. (Note: the proposal is subject to the approval by the Humanities Academic Board of Studies). (iii) introduce BTNY 201 (Plant Functional Biology and Biotechnology), BTNY 202 (Researching Plant Diversity), and BTNY 203 (Marine and Freshwater Botany) and delete BTNY 221, 223 and 225, subject to; 1 a. b. c. d. e. amending the levels of each of the new papers; including workload expectations for week 13 of the semester; re-wording the Contact Hours on page 15 of the proposal; clarifying alignment of the non-contact hours with internal assessment; making minor amendments to each of the prescriptions. (iv) amend the prerequisite, title and prescription for CHEM 201; (v) introduce CHEM 204 (Environmental Chemistry), subject to amending the Level from 7 to 6; (vi) amend the MATH/STAT 100-level Computer Science major subject requirements, subject to listing each of the approved papers; (vii) amend the title and prerequisite for DETE 308; (viii) amend the Ecology 200-level regulations by including STAT 210 in the 200-level major subject requirements, subject to considering how to manage the possible restrictions between STAT 210 and the other optional STAT 200-level papers ; (ix) a. b. c. (x) (xi) introduce GENE 315 (Genomes) and delete GENE 311, subject to; a. b. including the subject specific attributes for the BSc in Appendix 2; resolving possible overlap between this paper and BIOC 352. a. amend the Geology sections of Science Schedule A and the Applied Science Schedule A Part 1, subject to amending any reference to MARI 201 to OCEN 201; amend the prerequisites for GEOL 353 (Tectonics); b. (xii) amend titles and prerequisites of FOSC 200- and 300-level papers and amend the prescriptions of FOSC 301 and FOSC 308; amend the Food Science sections of Science Schedules A, B, C, & D, the Applied Science Schedule A: Part 1, and the Food Science Minor subject requirements; delete FOSC 303, FOSC 305 and FOSC 307; introduce SURV 310/SURV 508 (Spatial Analysis and Programming), subject to; a. changing the proposed code for the paper; b. linking the percentages in internal assessment with the hours required. (xvi) amend the prerequisite for PHSE 551, 555, 557, 580, and to limit all PHSE 500-level papers to students in the BPhEd (Hons), PGDipOE, PGDipPE, MDance and MPhEd programmes; (xvii) introduce PLBI 302 (Plants for the Future), subject to further consultation with the Department of Botany. It was suggested that establishing a Plant Biotechnology Board of Studies be considered. (xviii) a. amend the Statistics prerequisites section of Science Schedule B; b. amend the prescription and prerequisite of STAT 261; c. introduce STAT 210 (Statistical Methods 2), subject to; amend the prerequisite for MARI 202 and OCEN 201; amend the Marine Science minor subject requirements; introduce OCEN 321 (Ocean Physics and Modelling), subject to clarifying the length of the final examination; i amending the level of study to Level 6; ii reducing the length of the Purpose of Proposal and including part of it in the Justification section; clarifying the length of the final examination. iii B C (xix) replace SURV 103 with ENGL 228 as a major subject requirement in the BSurv, and majors in Land Planning & Development, Surveying Measurement and Geographic Information Systems, and in the Geographic Information Systems minor, subject to a minor amendment; (xx) amend the prerequisites for entry into the BSc (Hons) programme in Zoology; for submission to the Board of Graduate Studies proposals to: (i) amend the Anatomy sections of Science Schedules A, B and D; (ii) amend the Food Science sections of Science Schedules A, B, C, & D, the Applied Science Schedule A: Part 1, and the Food Science Minor subject requirements; (iii) amend the prerequisites for INFO 407; (iv) amend the prerequisite for PHSE 551, 555, 557, 580, and to limit all PHSE 500-level papers to students in the BPhEd (Hons), PGDipOE, PGDipPE, MDance and MPhEd programmes; (v) amend the regulations for the Master of Wildlife Management; for submission to the Board of Graduate Studies an indicative proposal to introduce a major in Sport and Exercise Nutrition for the MAppSc, subject to amending NUTX 407 to NUTN 407. 3 D Endorsed (i) a proposal to introduce MANT 252 (Developing Responsible Leadership); (ii) introduce PHIL 235 (Environmental Philosophy), subject to amending the level to Level 6; (iii) introduce RELS 225 (Science, Religion and Knowledge), and RELS 325 (Science, Religion and Knowledge (Advanced)); (iv) an indicative proposal to introduce a minor in Socially Responsible Leadership. 4 PART III - DIVISIONAL BUSINESS The Board 4. General Business (i) (ii) The Pro-Vice-Chancellor reported the number of Sciences Honours admissions for 2014 was the highest recorded to date; There was some discussion around the introduction of e:Vision next month. Among the matters noted were that: a. b. papers with DIR's should be kept to a minimum since such papers will not appear in students' timetables; the Division of Sciences plans to hold at least one course advising day similar to those held at present, at the beginning of each semester. In addition, an 'expo' type day was being considered at the end of Semester Two, mainly to give Health Sciences First Year students an overview of Sciences subjects available for study should they be unsuccessful in gaining places in the professional medical programmes. 5
