Dissertation plan
The dissertation plan shall provide the basis for adjudging whether or not the applicant has
shown conversance with previous and ongoing research within the area of the dissertation,
whether or not the selected issues are based upon ongoing research, whether or not the
suggested methods for data collection and analysis are adequate, as well as whether or not
the dissertation project is adjudged to be attainable within the time-limits for the PhDprogram.
Doctoral Dissertation Plan (Outline)
The plan shall be written in a manner that is understandable for persons without detailed
knowledge within the chosen problem area. Note that the plan should cover not more than
five A- pages, with single line spaces (font Times New Roman, 12 p), excluding reference list.
The plan must cover all the Points 1-11, inclusively (see below).
1. Dissertation - preliminary title
2. Background - Previous research of relevance for the dissertation project
Within the plan, you ought to therefore provide a sufficient background to the problem area
within which you have chosen to formulate your research questions. In this section you
should describe how your research questions are founded upon ongoing, surrent research
with regard to theory and empirical evidence.
3. Purpose and Specific questions
In addition to the overall purpose, you ought to outline, if possible, specific questions and/or
hypotheses. Since research is dependent upon how research questions originate from
theoretical and empirical notions this section is of central importance to your plan.
4. Design
Motivate your choice of basic design (experiment, questionnaires, interviews, RCT,
longitudinal, etc).
5. Materials/participant(research) group(s)
Describe here your planned participant(research group(s) and where appropriate the
principles for recruitment of participants, etc.
6. Method(s) for collecting data
Describe here with as many details as possible the methods for data collection that you will
apply in order to answer your research question(s).
7. Data analysis
Describe here which methods would be appropriate for analyzing the collected data.
8. Ethical research considerations

Outline here a description of the ethical research considerations that arise within the
dissertation project and how one ought to deal with them.
9. Newsworthiness
Describe here the scientific newsworthiness and/or the social benefits of the dissertation
project with regard to theory, method, results, etc.
10. Time plan
Describe here in as much detail as possible when the different sections of the dissertation
will be completed.
11. References
Only central references should be provided.
