ABC Order: Write spelling words in ABC order
Cursive: Write spelling words in cursive
Silly Sentences: Write 10 silly sentences using 2 spelling words
each
Short Story: Write a short story using all your spelling words
Dictionary: Look up spelling words in the dictionary and write one
definition
Ransom words: Write your spelling words by cutting out the
letters from a newspaper or magazine and clue them on a
paper.
Picture Words: Create a picture with the spelling words.
Thesaurus: Look up the spelling words in the thesaurus and write
at leas two words that mean the same.
Newspaper Writer: write a newspaper article using at least 3 of
the spelling words.
Poetry: Write a poem using your spelling words.
Classify: Arrange spelling words according to parts of speech
(Noun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb)
Rap: Make a rap or song using all your spelling words
Code: Make up a code. Write spelling words in your code. Give it to
a friend to solve
Type: Type spelling words on an Alpha Smart or Computer
Word Search: Make a word search using spelling words and graph
paper. Switch with a friend.
Shape of Words: Draw a shape and fill it with spelling words.
Rainbow: Write spelling word three times with a different color
to create a rainbow.
Vowels and Consonants: Write vowels in on color and consonant in
another color
Pattern: Write the Spelling Pattern or Sort in one color and the
rest of the word in another color
Acrostic: Write each word vertical on your paper (one letter to a
line). Find words that begin with each letter. For example
b = butterfly
E = eggplant
Two colors: Hold two different colored markers crayons or pens in
your hand. Copy the spelling words in your best handwriting.
Letter: Use all your words to write a letter to a super hero or
anyone.
Flash Cards: Make flash cards of your spelling words
Practice Test: Pair up with a friend and give each other a spelling
test. Be sure to grade it.
Parent Spelling Test: Give your parents a spelling test. Be sure to
grade it.
Bookmark: Design a bookmark using spelling words.
Scramble: Scramble spelling words and give to a friend to
unscramble.
Dollar Amount: Write alphabet on a piece of paper. Under A write
$1.00, Under B write $2.00 and so on. Figure up the dollar
amount of each of your spelling words.
Fraction Spelling: Find the fractions of your spelling words. # of
vowels = V #consonants = C
# of letters # letters
Spelling Pyramid: Write first letter on a line. Write first and
second letter on next line. Write first second and third on the
next line and so on.

Or Write One word on a line. Then two words on the next line.

Riddle Me: Write a riddle out of spelling words.
Sing: Sing spelling words softly.
Alliteration: Do any of your spelling words begin with the same
sound? Even if they don’t you can write alliterations for them!
Try to use as many words as you can within the sentence that
has the same beginning sound – But it has to make sense to be
a sentence! Now try saying them quickly.
Stairsteps: Write spelling words as if they are stairs, adding one
letter each times.
Backwards Spelling: Spell the spelling words backwards.
Comic Strip: Create a comic strip using your spelling words.
Spell It: Use your spelling words to make a stack. Draw from the
stack and read it to Player 2. If spelled correctly, roll dice
and move. If spelled incorrectly, turn over. Now Player 2
draws and Player 1 spells.
Match It: Give each player 5 spelling words. Put the rest in a
stack. Draw a card from the stack. If the pattern matches a
word in your hand, put the match down, read the match aloud,
roll the dice and move! If the pattern does NOT match a
word in your hand, keep the work and your turn is over. Next
player takes a turn.
Think It: Use your spelling words to make a stack. Draw a card
from the stack and read it aloud. Think of another word with
the same pattern, say it, roll dice and move. If another Player
doesn’t believe your word has the pattern, they say
CHALLENGE! You much look up the word in the dictionary or
word list. If you are right, you move DOUBLE the number
rolled! If the Challenger is right, the Challenger moves
forward the number rolled. Next player takes a turn.
Time Sort: Time yourself sorting spelling words. Try to beat your
time.
Spelling Fish: Combine spelling words with another partner from
your spelling group. Play “Go Fish”
Blind Spelling: Select a spelling word and read it out loud. Close
your eyes and spell the word out loud. Open your eyes and say
the word as you check to see if you spelled it correctly. If
not correct, repeat process. Do this for each of your spelling
words.
Sign Language: Use the sign language alphabet and sign your
spelling words.
Finger Tracing: Use your finger to spell out each of you spelling
words at a time.
Spelling Baseball: Dray for bases on a piece of paper. Pitcher
selects a word. If batter can spell it correctly, he moves
forward one base. If batter cannot spell word, he remains
where he is. One point for every time the player passes home
base.
Spelling Bingo: Each player folds a piece of paper 4 times so you
have 16 boxes. Each person makes his own game board and
chooses 16 words form the current list. Write one word in
each box. The caller says a spelling word. If a player has the
word on his bingo car, he traces over it with a pen or colored
pencil. If the player does not have the word, he turns his
paper over and writes it on the back. For a real challenge play
black out BINGO.
Connect the Dots: Make a square of 4 rows of dots with 4 dots in
each row. Before taking a turn, the player must spell a
spelling word. IF the word is correct, he connects two dots.
When a player forms a square, he can write his initials in the
box. Player with most squares and end wins.
