IV. Action Items

A. Curricular Actions from the College of Arts and Communication

1. Action from the Department of Communication

Zach Oster and Richard Cummings moved approval of area IV. A.1.1. Angela Harlan kindly brought to the committee attention that the 25 character abbreviation should be changed to

“Interactive Communication” and shouldn’t be “flash development” and this clearly shows more than a 50% change in the class and should have current and revised updated syllabus.

After further discussion and a hand vote of 6 Yes and 6 No, this proposal was not approved and was rolled back for the following changes: 25-character abbreviation should be changed from

“Flash Development” to “Interactive Communication,” and since this revision is considered 50% or more of the course content a previous version of a syllabus and revised version of a syllabus showing the changes to be included in this proposal before it can be brought back to the next meeting.

Course Revision – CL – Title, Prerequisite, and Course Description Changes – MAGD 271 :

The committee kindly amended that Greg Cook could make this change in all three courses—these edits were made in all three courses during the UCC meeting.

freshmen. Melanie Agnew agreed that the prerequisites might need to be reconsidered in the future once the new major is up and running.

1.1. New Course – CL – CIGENRL 241 : Globalization and Education

Greg Cook asked if this course would satisfy learning outcomes for other majors, minors or degrees. Liz Hachten brought up that CIGENRL 342 and 343 seem to be broader when it comes to educational outcomes and maybe too broad and also brought up that there are others teaching these topics within other courses/departments across campus. She feels that there is plenty of room within curriculum for these topics but she questions how some of these address global education and that the education theme needs to be stated more explicitly. Liz suggested that the titles be changed so students understand what they are enrolling in.

2.1. Change in Minor – CL – Special Education Minor for Non-Education Majors

Liz Hachten asked what happens when someone changes from a non-licensure to licensure degree: do the core courses change? Rowand Robinson responded saying they would not change whether they were licensure or non-licensure student. The committee kindly brought attention that the degree type should be NA not BSE since this is not allowed in minors.

The committee amended asking that Greg Cook could make this correction in the proposal during the UCC meeting.

2.2. Change in Minor – CL – Special Education – Adaptive Education Licensure Minor

Zach Oster kindly brought to the committee attention if SPECFLD 410 should be changed to a unique requirement. This will allow these courses to be taken in the major as well as being required for students in the minor. The committee amended asking Greg Cook make the change that SPECFLD 410 or CIFLD 402 can be changed to a unique requirement—this was noted in the comments area of the proposal and will need to be implemented when the proposal arrives at the

Registrar’s Office.

Jillian Smith brought up that there is a licensure for Environmental Studies and Sciences. Liz

Hachten suggested that this be indicated in the catalog. Jillian said any substantial requirement changes should be told to DPI.

4. Actions from the Department of Languages & Literatures

Bob Leitheiser and Marshall Anderson moved approval of area IV. D.4.1-4. Liz Hachten explained that she requested the revised syllabus for each course below (due to the proposed changes in number of credits) but the syllabi had not made it to Becky Pfeifer to be loaded into

CourseLeaf. She explained that these courses have already been taught for several years as 2credit courses. She had asked that Becky Pfeifer update the Course Catalog Description to remove the “Repeatable two times for” and leave it “maximum of 6 credits in major/degree.”

As the committee went through thoroughly discussing these proposals, Zach Oster and Bob

Leitheiser asked that these be voted for approval and the above changes made. Richard

Cummings and George Ferencz disagreed that others have had proposals rolled back due to lack of consultations, syllabi and additional changes. They both felt changes need to be made and discussed with their curriculum committee and should be rolled back. The committee took a hand vote to approve the motion, and the vote was 6 Yes – 6 No – so the motion did not pass and the proposals were not approved.

5.3. New Course-CL- Math 147 : Mathematics in Early Childhood. Proposal not approved.

Angela Harlan did go through and update the course title so it was the same as the syllabus.

Angela said that Learning outcomes are new due to the new assessment information now being asked of and explained that the title was supposed to be the Mathematics in Early Childhood

Education. This is credit that goes towards the Early Childhood degree. The General Education

Committee said that the previous title was too specific and felt that is was not designed for general students. In order to receive the GE accreditation they need to stay with this title. Greg

Cook and Bob Leitheiser asked that the catalog description and the topic list in the syllabus be changed so they reflect the title. Angela Harlan said she would be more than happy to revise these. Angela Harlan told the committee she would be okay withdrawing this proposal to bring back to a later date since it will not be offered in Fall 2016.
