1. Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Medical Fellows Program
One year research program with full stipend, health insurance, and research allowance.

2. Doris Duke Medical Fellowships
One year program for international research with full stipend, health insurance, travel to
research site as well as conferences. Must apply through one or more of 6 participating
institutions.

3. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP)
One year of research at NIH campus in Bethesda, MD with full stipend and benefits.

4. Alpha Omega Alpha
$5000 support vor 8-10 weeks full time research i.e. does not require a year of research, 5
month Discovery would be sufficient. One half paid up front, one half on submission of a final
report. Up to $1000 for travel to present at a meeting. Only one nominee per school.
Internal Application Deadline: December 31, 2015. Emory must submit to National Office by
January 31, 2015.
Application requires a 4 page research proposal and letter of support from mentor.

5. Thermo-Scientific Pierce Scholarship Program
This is an odd little scholarship and might be most appropriate for a student near completion of
Discovery. They give out two $10,000 awards and four $5,000 awards (paid to the SOM to
offset tuition). You need to submit transcript, and description (abstract or poster or ?) of your
research, and answer a question about a protein important to medicine in the next 10 years.
They have confirmed that a medical student would be eligible (apply as graduate student).

Ethics
1. Fellowship at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE)
Two week paid trip to Germany for study in ethics and history. This would have to be one piece
of a larger Discovery project on medical ethics.

Gerontology
1. American Federation for Aging Research - Medical Student Training in Aging Research
(MSTAR) Program
a. Home Institution Track: Three month stipend for research in aging at Emory and poster
presentation at American Geriatrics Society annual meeting in DC.
b. National Training Center Track: Three month stipend for research at a national training
center and poster presentation at American Geriatric Society annual meeting in DC.
Training Centers: Harvard, Johns Hopkins, UCLA, UCSD, UNC, University of Texas Health
Sciences San Antonio. Travel to a training center not covered.

1. American Society of Hematology (ASH) HONORS Award
$5,000 stipend plus travel to annual ASH meeting for two years.

3. Conquer Cancer Foundation – Medical Student Rotation for Underrepresented Populations
Funding for 8-10 week clinical oncology research rotation, with $5,000 stipend, $1,500 for travel
to annual ASCO meeting and $2,000 stipend to mentor for research.

1. Infectious Diseases Society of America Medical Scholars Program
$2000 stipend to support research with a mentor who is a member of the IDSA. This can be
a domestic or global health project.

1. American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene - Kean Travel Fellowship
To support research in tropical medicine and global health. At least one month must be
spent at international site. Covers RT airfare and up to $1,000 in living expenses.

2. Emory Global Health Institute Multidisciplinary Team Field Scholars Program
Up to $3,000 per student to support global health research in which the medical student is part
of a team including students from 3 different schools at Emory working with an Emory mentor.
Can be conducted at a domestic or international site.

Medicine/Diabetes, Digestive, Kidney diseases
1. National institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIH/NIDDK)
For a student interested in a full year of research in one of these areas there is the
possibility of a full stipend from NIH as a supplement to an NIDDK T32 training grant. This
will depend upon the individual mentor and permission from the training grant director.

3. Vanderbilt-Emory-Cornell-Duke Consortium Fogarty Global Health Fellowships
11 month international clinical research program in low-to-middle income countries with
full stipend, health insurance and travel. Student must work with a mentor from the VECD
consortium.

Pediatrics
1. American Pediatric Society and Society for Pediatric Research
For research at a non-Emory school of medicine. Provides stipend for two to three months.
Underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply but this is open to all medical students.

Radiology and Imaging
1. Radiological Society of North America
Provides a stipend for full-time research under the direction of a member of the Radiological
Society of America. Fellowship provides $3,000 and mentor’s department must provide
matching funds.

Surgery/Global Health
1. Paul Farmer Global Surgery Research Associateship
For a student wishing to do a 1 year program. Provides an opportunity to work as part of a team
conducting surgery and research at various underserved international sites including Haiti,
Rwanda, Uganda and Liberia. NOTE: this program does not provide funding. They will provide
information on funding opportunities that can be applied for. Requires prior completion of
surgical clerkship.

Technology Development
1. Atlanta Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, Research Technologies Program
Provides five student grants of $5,000 each for research in developing new technologies or new
applications for existing technologies.
Application Deadline: March 1, 2015. Grants will be awarded by April 1, 2015 and funds must be
used by May 31, 2015.

2. American Urological Society Summer Medical Students Fellowship Program
Provides a $3,000 stipend for research in Urology with an experienced mentor. Typically only
