Allied Health
1. At the Allied Health Fall 2011 ATF Meeting, the members voted to delete the Allied Health
Matrix because it was “outdated and misleading” to Arizona students. Some of the
following reasons were:
 CHM 151/151L and BIO 205/205L are no longer required courses for the Allied
Health degree.
 The row and note for ASU suggests inaccuracy since ASU does not offer a degree.
 A note on the common course matrix to advise students to reference the Transfer
Guides for accurate information would be misleading. Students should not be
directed to view the Transfer Guides as they are outdated for both NAU and
UA. (With the conversion to Peoplesoft only, both NAU and UA lost the capability
to update Transfer Guides which requires DARS). Therefore, this note should not
exist on the matrix.
2.
Also noted, the following statements should be corrected in the ATF minutes for NAU:
o CHM 113 is the ASU course, not an NAU course.
o The statement that NAU’s courses are “no longer required for the NAU RN
Program” sounds a bit like a reference to our Nursing degree. This statement
should say, “CHM 151 & 151L and BIO 205 & 205L are no longer required courses for
the Allied Health degree(s) at NAU.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------CONFIRMATION OF COMMON COURSE MATRICES FOR ALLIED HEALTH (ADD THE RED)
“The common course matrices were distributed to the group. The courses listed on NAU’s
include CHM113 CHM 151 & 151L and BIO205 & 205L. These are no longer required for the
NAU RN Allied Health program. After a discussion, May Siripoon moved to delete the Common
Course Matrix. Bryan Dodd seconded the motion and there was a unanimous affirmative vote
to remove. No need to consider additional common courses since there was a vote to remove.”
Feedback from our Allied Health ATF Deborah McCormick:
Hi Alecia:
Thanks for drafting this. I agree as well. Just for the record, CHM 151 and BIO 205 have
NEVER been required in the Health Sciences programs, although we do accept BIO 205 as a
department-approved elective.
Regardless, I do believe that there is no "common course matrix."
Please let me know if you need additional information and thanks again!
Debby :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Family Studies and Consumer Sciences: Merchandising and Retailing
At the Family Studies & Consumer Sciences - Merchandising and Retailing Fall 2011 ATF Meeting,
the common course matrix was voted to be deleted: The following is some of the communication
and ATF discussions that took place:
Since NAU and Maricopa were the only two institutions keeping this matrix in existence with one
direct equivalency (UA offered electives only), the existence of the matrix was questionable (no
longer a shared major which is a requirement of a matrix to exist). However, the new position on
this may be to hold off on the deletion of the Merchandising matrix until more discussion and
curricular re-designing at NAU take place.
“I am supportive of this decision.” The new NAU program will be a BS degree in strategic
communication With an emphasis in Merchandising or Advertising or Public Relations. The degree will
have a common core of ADV and PR courses, and a COM core. The MER emphasis will include MER
135, MER 235, MER 300w, MER 331, MER 431, MER 490c and MER electives. We will no longer offer a
MER minor.
Thanks

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------More history and communication….
(9/12/2011) Approximately one month in advance, Kris Swanson emailed Ann Huber informing
her of the recent NAU changes to the merchandising program…
“The merchandising program at NAU is going through some major changes. This will affect ATF
but I do not know how yet. I will share all information with you when we have passed through
our NAU curriculum committees which may not be until next semester. As you might be aware
of, NAU is not accepting new students into the merchandising degree for this academic year. I
will keep everyone posted as I know information. Thanks, Kris”
(9/12/2011) Ann questioned keeping the matrix: She emailed me and asked if the matrix should
be removed. We responded that if the
ATF removed the matrix, would it be able to be redeveloped in the future?
Ann’s response: “In theory, yes, a matrix can be redeveloped. I am concerned, however, that
there is only one community college that has any courses on this matrix. We need to develop
guidelines to determine if a matrix can/should be developed with only one or two community
colleges or, if a MAPP, TAG, TAP or other cc to u agreement is more appropriate.” “If NAU is not
accepting students into the program this year, then it is not really a shared major.” Best, Ann
(9/20/2011) Ann emailed Maricopa and UA asking for their input with removal of this Matrix.
(9/27/2011) Maricopa responded, “Ann, I did not receive any objections. Please proceed with archiving
it. Rose (Not sure about UA).

Subject: Allied Health Common Course Matrix
Hi Alecia:
At the Allied Health ATF meeting members agreed to delete their Common Course Matrix for the
following reason:
The deletion of the Common Course Matrix was made because the current matrix is misleading and
may be outdated. Only two of the universities were part of it and one of them (NAU)already has a
note associated with this matrix that indicates that the "common courses listed below are not
appropriate choices for this NAU degree; please see the Transfer Guide."
The APASC members were concerned about the two requests to delete the matrices (Allied Health and
Merchandizing and Retailing) so want more information. I checked that 2011-12 Allied Health Common
Course Matrix and the statement referenced above is not there; it is, however on the 2010-11 matrix.
Since NAU is one of the two universities with a degree associated with this ATF, please advise on
whether or not you think the matrix is viable for your students, or is it misleading.
In advance, many thanks,
Ann
