20. Nappy Changing Policy All staff at Bonnington House Nursery will be trained and instructed to adhere to the same procedures to ensure the best practice is followed and the spread of infection prevented. How to change a Nappy All staff should ensure, before starting the changing of a nappy that adequate nappies are available in a variety of sizes, the child’s wipes and cream are at hand and if required a change of clothes. This will include children that are using reusable nappies, ensuring all elements of the nappy are supplied and close at hand for adequate number of changes throughout the day. This will allow the child and staff to have a pleasant experience while changing the nappy. Clean the changing mat and ensure the area is clean before use Ensure that you have the protective clothing on - apron and appropriately fitting gloves. Choose the correct size of nappy for the child Have a nappy sack ready to dispose of the dirty nappy Always talk to the child throughout the nappy procedure (one-to-one time). This will ensure the child gains the best experience and feels safe and secure during this intimate time Clean the child thoroughly using wipes If necessary, barrier cream can be applied (following the guidance on the packaging) ONLY if the parent has signed a medication form and the child has their OWN labelled supply in their nappy box Clean and disinfect the area with anti-bacterial spray and disposable paper towels All equipment used in cleaning the area should be disposed in the bin Nappies will be put into nappy bins with sealed secure lids which will be provided in each nappy changing area to put all nappies in and minimise the spread of infection With a high increase in the request for Natural Reusable Nappies, we have implemented a strategy plan to accommodate these as much as possible. The following procedures will be adhered to, to ensure that the highest standard of infection control is maintained. The management of the area will continue to be the same as before, however with regards to the reusable nappies. This should be a nappy bin that is lockable, to avoid a bio hazard if the bucket was to be knocked over during the day. Parents will collect the used nappies at the end of each day that the child attends nursery. All professionals will be asked to ensure that the management of the Nappy changing area is followed. This will be maintained by: Ensuring that the bins are never over filled, therefore changed when and if it is ¾ full, tie them up and dispose of them in the main waste bin outside Have a schedule for emptying the bins at the end and during the day if needed Place nappy bags (from the nappy bin) inside of a black bin bag to “double bag” soiled materials Clean the bins inside and out on a regular basis to minimise infection When collecting and cleaning the bins, always wear protective clothing to ensure safety for the individual When you are finished always ensure protective clothing is removed and disposed of appropriately Wash your hands!
