Job Ref. #15-18 The Education Research Collaborative (ERC) at TERC is a non-profit education research and development organization focused on improving science and mathematics education, is currently recruiting for the following position: Research Associate This is a part-time position with benefits, 50% (20 hrs/week). TERC is seeking a research associate to assist on two projects. Time is split evenly between the two projects. Main duties on both projects include qualitative data collection and management and analysis. One project, Investigating STEM Literacies in MakerSpaces (STEMLiMS) will run through August 2017. Specifically, the work will require observations and analysis of literacy practices used by different groups of makers. The research associate will conduct observations and informal interviews with youth makers in action, assist with qualitative data management, organization, and analysis, and meet regularly with project staff. Data collection for the coming year will likely occur during out-of-school times in Somerville with middle school students or Boston with high school students. The second project, Science Literacy through Infographics (SLI), will run through December 2017. SLI is studying how to support high school students in creating infographics about scientific topics of their choice. The research associate will be expected to assist with materials development, research support, and classroom observations. Responsibilities include classroom observations in a Boston high school, creation and updating of software documentation, support in design and implementation of research on the characteristics of data visualization tools; maintenance of website. Requirements: BA in education, psychology, anthropology, or related field. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work in a collaborative decision making environment. Experience using video and audio recording equipment to record classroom data. Ability to work independently. Ability to use MS Office and to learn other software tools for data analysis. Experience using Wordpress or other CMS to maintain a basic website. Ability to read and apply academic texts on literacy, STEM education, learning, and qualitative methodology. Preferred Qualifications: MA/MS in education, psychology, anthropology, or related field 3-5 years teaching (formal or informal) or educational research experience. Experience with data visualization tools (e.g. Excel, R) Classroom observation experience or other experience documenting complex activities through field notes Experience as a maker/artist/engineer/tinkerer.
