Now that we have learned about the significance and importance of a Coat of Arms for the municipality of the City of

Markham, it is time to create your own family Coat of Arms. There are several steps that need to be completed:

Coat of Arms - Steps:

1.

Choose a template to work with as your rough copy.

2.

Brainstorm your initial ideas on the reverse: family history, symbols to use, ideas for motto

3.

Interview family members to learn more about your family history

4.

Create a rough draft of the Coat of Arms using purposeful colours and symbols that represent your heritage.

Don’t forget to create a family motto!

5.

Get good copy paper from Ms. Rocha.

6.

Complete good copy of Coat of Arms

7.

Complete write-up

8.

Hand in Coat of Arms and Write-up by December 10.

Write-up Questions:

Answer the following questions in full sentences including supporting evidence, details, examples etc.:

What did you discover when you interviewed your family members? Be specific.

Describe each symbol that you have used in your Coat of Arms. What are they and how do they represent your family heritage?

The art work requires further effort and detail in all aspects.

Level 2

I have selected and created some signs and symbols that have some link to my family heritage to represent on my coat of arms.

I have completed an interview to locate primary information about my heritage; further questions and a deeper understanding of my family heritage is necessary. I have edited some writing conventions.

I have used some signs, symbols and colours and have communicated in limited detail how these symbols reflect and understanding of my heritage. The art work requires further attention to detail, neatness and/or use of space.

Level 3

I have selected and created signs and symbols appropriate to my family heritage to represent on my coat of arms.

I have successfully used the interview format to find primary resource information about my family heritage.

I have edited most writing conventions accurately.

I have used and explained my use of signs, symbols and colours and how my choices communicate an understanding of my family heritage accurately.

The art work is neat, eyecatching an uses space well.

Level 4

I have selected and created signs and symbols consistent with my family heritage are a significant part of my background to represent on my coat of arms.

I have very successfully used the interview format to find primary resource information about my family heritage and extended by doing secondary research as well. All of my writing conventions have been edited correctly.

I have used and explained all of my signs, symbols and colour choices and have communicated and extended how my choices symbolize and reflect my heritage. The art work is detailed, aesthetically pleasing and makes excellent use of space.
