Faculty Fellow Position Outline OVERVIEW: Faculty Fellows will play a critical role in the success of many objectives at Columbus State. The College’s goal for Fellows is that they further work that is mutually important and create tangible outcomes that can be shared widely with the teaching and learning community. The Faculty Fellow position is ideal for faculty members who are passionate about teaching and seek to use their experience and expertise to aid the College in fulfilling administrative and academic endeavors. Faculty Fellows are chosen based on their ability to link their disciplinary or multidisciplinary expertise with the College’s mission. The Faculty Fellow plays a critical role in the success of many division and College initiatives. Fellows will become essential to the future of CSCC’s network as they apply their intellect, insight, energy, and knowledge to their new role. Fellows will help drive projects, bringing expertise and fresh ideas for design and implementation of the desired outcomes. For these reasons, the College does not set a minimum or maximum amount of Fellow appointments. The need for and usage of Faculty Fellows will range based on the purpose and may vary with each semester. APPROVAL PROCESS: If a department or administrator determines a need to utilize a Faculty Fellow, s/he will consult with and seek written approval from the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and the appropriate Division Dean. ELIGIBILITY: Faculty Fellow appointments will be awarded to tenured full-time faculty, who demonstrate promise for excellence in areas such as: Quality and assessment; accreditation and Department of Education, Board of Regents, and/or Higher Learning Commission objectives; enhanced learning and student success initiatives; distance learning and instructional technologies; clinical, externship, practicum and other external learning opportunities; curriculum, policy, course and program development; faculty development; grant oversight and administration; and other areas as may be determined. To be selected as a Faculty Fellow, an applicant must be employed with the College for a minimum of four consecutive years. Ideal candidates will be faculty, who have demonstrated a high level of service to the department, the division, the College, the profession and the community. Departments/administrators seeking candidates for Faculty Fellow work should specify the desired qualifications and particular knowledge, skills and/or experience needed for the position (e.g. committee service, distance learning experience, or leadership skills). All appointments must be approved by the department chairperson from whom the faculty is appointed, the Dean of the division, and the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs. 1|Page FACULTY FELLOW DESCRIPTION: A Faculty Fellow is a member of the College faculty, who has demonstrated expertise in the content area for which s/he is selected. At the expiration of the initial term, renewal of Fellow appointments will be semester to semester, unless otherwise agreed by the College and the Faculty Fellow. COMPENSATION AND WORKLOAD: Faculty will not receive additional compensation for selection as a Fellow. Instead, Faculty Fellows will be compensated through reassigned time. The amount of reassigned time will vary based on appointment. Reassigned time will generally be up to 8 contact hours. Consistent with Article 4, §4.07, for every hour of reassigned time granted, at least 2.5 hours will be dedicated to the task. In certain circumstances, the College and the Faculty Fellow may agree to grant up to a full load (15) hours of reassigned time for Faculty Fellow work. In addition, Fellows are provided with access to a workstation, staff support, and access to other facilities within the College work environment as appropriate. Faculty Fellows who are fully released from teaching duties are expected to maintain a regular 40-hour work week during the semesters in which they serve. They will not be required to, but may voluntarily work during academic breaks (spring break and the breaks between semesters). Faculty Fellows, who work a reduced teaching load, will have their instruction and office hours reduced on a pro-rata basis consistent with Article 4, §4.07 (one hour from direct instruction and 1.5 hours from office hours, which may be designated as scheduled or flexible hours as long as a minimum of four (4) hours are scheduled on campus). Full-time faculty members are expected to teach at least 50% of their full instructional load during an academic year. However, under “special circumstances,” this requirement can be waived by the Dean and the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs. See, §4.07. Faculty Fellow appointments qualify as this special circumstance. Faculty appointed as a Fellow may continue to teach an overload contract up to the maximum allowable hours.
