Parkside Pioneer Days 2014
April 1, 2014
Dear 4th grade parents and students,
Pioneer Days is quickly approaching! This special event is the
culmination of our students’ study of Indiana and Bartholomew County
history during which students will experience what life was like in
Indiana during the time of the pioneer settlers. On Tuesday, May 13, all
four classes will perform a square dance for parents and guests, rotate
through a variety of historical stations, hear stories about Abraham
Lincoln, and enjoy some homemade ice cream. Here is what that day
looks like:
8:25 – 9:15 Square dance in gym
9:15 – 12:30 Rotation through 8 historical stations
12:30 – 1:00 Pioneer lunch
1:00 – 1:45 Pioneer games
1:45 – 2:15 Abraham Lincoln Story telling by Jane Boultinghouse
2:15 – 2:30 Ice Cream
Each class will travel on a different day to Simmons School in Hope,
where they will role-play in a turn of the century classroom. That
schedule looks like this:
Monday, May 12: Mrs. Grider’s class to Simmons School
Wednesday, May 14: Mr. Ulrich’s class to Simmons School
Thursday, May 15: Mrs. Harmon’s class to Simmons School
Friday, May16: Mrs. Carr and Mrs. Rawlin’s to Simmons School
Volunteers are essential for this event to take place! We thank you
for the many replies we received to our first letter in the fall. Please
complete the attached form to show how you can help in this fun event
by Friday, April 11th to your child’s teacher. Of course, all adult
participants need an ISP background check.
Part of the Pioneer Day learning experience is being able to dress
up as Pioneers! The costumes do not need to be elaborate and can be
created from your closets at home or borrowed from a previous Pioneer
Day participant. Students and volunteers are expected to dress as
pioneers. Students can wear the same outfit both days. A list of costume
suggestions is printed on the back of this letter.
We would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to
consider volunteering for this fun learning experience! If you have any
questions, please contact any member of the Pioneer Days steering
committee:
