CONFERENCES Core Curriculum Conference This one hour conference occurs two days per week and covers core topics mandated by the ACGME. Presentations of additional core topics, including procedure-related topics are also provided. These conferences are presented by Cardiovascular Medicine faculty or faculty from other divisions or departments in the medical school. Case Conference This weekly one hour conference consists on case presentations of recently-evaluated patients. There is a focus on procedures germane to the patients being presented such as cardiac catheterization, echocardiography and cardiac CT or MRI. Many of the patients presented at this conference are cardiac surgical candidates. The lively discussions among fellows, cardiologists and cardiac surgeons have made this conference everyone’s favorite. Cardiovascular Medicine Grand Rounds This weekly one hour conference is presented by Cardiovascular Medicine faculty, faculty from other divisions or departments in the medical school or by speakers from other universities. It focuses on recent advances in cardiovascular disease and contains a blend of clinical, translational and basic cardiovascular topics. Journal Club This one hour monthly conference focuses on analysis of recently-published articles in cardiovascular disease. The main purpose of this conference is to teach fellows how to evaluate the cardiovascular literature. Research Conference This one hour monthly conference consists of fellow presentations of research in progress. During the first year, the fellow presents his or her hypothesis for proposed research as well as a discussion of methodology and a review of the relevant literature. During the second and third years, the fellow provides an update on the research and eventually provides a presentation of the completed study. In each year the fellow receives feedback from faculty and other fellows. Morbidity and Mortality Conference This one hour monthly conference is presented by fellows and focuses on discussions of mortality and major morbidity on the UH Cardiac Intensive Care Unit/Ward Service. Discussions focus on ways in which mortality and morbidity could have been avoided. Fellows Conference This monthly one hour conference consists of a presentation by a fellow on topic of his/her choice. Special Lectures From time to time speakers from other institutions are available for lectures on cardiovascular topics on days other than those devoted to Cardiovascular Medicine Grand Rounds. Such lectures are typically clinical and focus on state-of-the-art management of cardiovascular disease.
