The sustainability profession speaks as 7,500 votes decide this year’s sustainability champions Pavegen Systems were one of the big winners last night, as global innovation and collaboration took centre stage at the 2degrees Champions Awards! The event showcased the companies and individuals pushing the boundaries of sustainable business. The awards - the only ones entirely voted for by industry peers - rewarded Pavegen, along with a house built almost entirely from waste products and Sky’s Rainforest Rescue campaign with WWF. The annual award ceremony which was hosted at Wembley Stadium was attended by 400 people. There were a total of 240 entries, a massive 140% increase from last year, and 7,473 votes were cast to decide the final 14 winners. Pavegen have pioneered a flooring tile that converts wasted kinetic energy from footfall into renewable electricity. In addition to winning an award, Pavegen also installed 8 of their tiles at the event, creating a walkway that powered a camera. The installation acted as an open-space photobooth, allowing attendees to take pictures from their footfall, with resulting images displayed on a screen at the end of the walkway. The images captured by the camera acted as a visual representation of the renewable energy generation. CEO Laurence Kemball-Cook attended the event, accepting the award on behalf of the company. “The 2 Degrees Awards brought together a huge range of businesses, all looking to improve their carbon footprint and seek out innovative alternatives. The awards have opened doors for Pavegen, bringing us closer to our own objective of commercialisation through potential partnerships in the future.” Martin Chilcott, CEO, 2degrees said: “This year’s award shortlisted nominees are an incredible collection of individuals and companies who have changed the way we think about sustainable business. Pavegen’s award represents years of commitment to thinking afresh, tackling inefficiencies and trailblazing ground-breaking solutions which have a positive impact on society. The 2degrees network provides businesses with an opportunity to showcase best practice, build relationships on and offline, and inspire others to start their sustainable journey.” -ENDSFor further information and to arrange interviews with winners, please contact: Simon Ward, 2degrees simonward@2degreesnetwork.com 01865 597 645 Full list of winners, runner-ups and commended individuals and organisations Building or Property Project WINNER: University of Brighton RUNNER-UP: Mizen Group COMMENDED: LILAC Energy & Carbon Management – Long-Term Payback WINNER: Pavegen RUNNER-UP: Diageo COMMENDED: Bristol City Council Energy & Carbon Management – Short-Term Payback WINNER: Barts Health NHS Trust RUNNER-UP: Wyke Farms COMMENDED: Belu Water External Communications Campaign WINNER: Sky RUNNER-UP: Barts Health NHS Trust COMMENDED: Lavery Pennell Innovation of the Year WINNER: Worldview Learning RUNNER-UP: Virgin Atlantic Airways COMMENDED: Pavegen Internal Engagement WINNER: PwC RUNNER-UP: Barts Health NHS Trust COMMENDED: Wingland Foods Personality of the Year * WINNER: HRH Prince of Wales RUNNER-UP: Calum Richardson COMMENDED: The Arctic 30 Sustainability Champion of the Year * WINNER: Eldad Umenjoh, Anjong Young Farmers Group Cameroon RUNNER-UP: Cat Fletcher, Freegle Brighton COMMENDED: Trewin Restorick, Global Action Plan Social Value WINNER: Carbon Solutions Global RUNNER-UP: SLOW LIFE Foundation COMMENDED: Low Carbon Hub Solution of the Year WINNER: Vegware RUNNER-UP: RB (Reckitt Benckiser) COMMENDED: Sustrans Supply Chain Management WINNER: Pukka Herbs RUNNER-UP: Asda COMMENDED: Coca-Cola Enterprises Waste & Resource Management WINNER: University of Brighton RUNNER-UP: Regent Street Direct COMMENDED: Barts Health NHS Trust Water Management WINNER: Barts Health NHS Trust RUNNER-UP: Coca-Cola Great Britain COMMENDED: European Water Partnership 2degrees Member of the Year * WINNER: Paul Hinkin, Black Architecture Best Internal Awards Engagement WINNER: RB (Reckitt Benckiser) * Award at an individual level, rather than company level About 2degrees - www.2degreesnetwork.co.uk 2degrees helps major corporations cut costs, reduce risk and achieve smarter growth by being more sustainable. About Pavegen – www.pavegen.com Pavegen is the invention of Laurence Kemball-Cook, 28, an industrial design engineer and graduate of Loughborough University. The CEO and founder of Pavegen developed the concept in 2009, whilst researching kinetic-off grid energy solutions in environments where low-carbon technologies like solar and wind are not practical. Pavegen tiles can be used in both indoor and outdoor locations and work best where there is high footfall such as retail and transport hubs. The technology is integrated, discreetly, into the existing environment, underfoot. Permanent installations include three schools in the UK, the entrance of a large office and an installation at Federation Square, Melbourne – to name a few. Pavegen units are also available in modular form for use at events, such as exhibitions and marketing campaigns, to demonstrate their commitment to innovation, sustainability and CSR initiatives.
