Dear Phronesis Students, Please see below for information about a fellowship opportunity. The Phronesis program, in conjunction with the Hobby Center for Public Policy’s Civitas Initiative, will be appointing 2 new fellowships for a trip to Oxford University to study Human Rights, Humanitarian Aid, and Violent Conflict in the Spring Semester of the 2014-2015 academic year. The fellows will: Meet regularly during January-March of 2015 to study and discuss works by internationally recognized scholars of human rights, war and peace, and global justice. The seminars will be led and organized by Dr. Johanna Luttrell, Post-Doctoral Scholar in Political Philosophy. The fellows will report to Dr. Luttrell as well. For one week of late March, Fellows will travel to Oxford University in the UK, for an intensive seminar in conjunction with Oxford’s Merton College, Hertford College, and Oxford’s Center for Ethics, Law, and Armed Conflict. The fellows will meet and workshop with the scholars whose work they have studied in the preceding months. The fellowship will cover each fellow’s airfare to London, transportation to and from the London, nightly lodging at Hertford College, breakfast each day, and some dinners. Please submit a letter of interest that includes any work in global and/or cross cultural scholarship and experience, work or interest in issues of war and peace, human rights, moral theory, or global justice, as well as a CV and/or resume, to Johanna Luttrell, at jluttre2@central.uh.edu. The Phronesis program will choose students on the basis of their interest level in the subject matter of global justice and human rights, and the degree to which such an opportunity can benefit each student. This is world-class professional development opportunity, and we are looking for students who can benefit from international networking in these areas, i.e., students who aim to work in fields related to international human rights. Qualifications: o Must be a student in good standing in the Phronesis program o Coursework or other experience in international affairs and/or cross cultural matters, issues of war and peace, human rights, or global justice o Ability to travel abroad for 1 week in late March 2015. This means ability to miss regular spring classes for one week, and includes the possession of, or ability to acquire, a passport. o Ability to conduct oneself with flexibility and professionalism in an international setting o Ability to handle extra reading and meetings in one’s current course load for Spring, 2015 o Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal. o Evidence of interest in social/ global justice, and/ or ethics in international affairs Expectations: o Fellows will attend all seminar sessions in advance of trip to Oxford (approximately 5, one-hour meetings in January-March of 2015) o Fellows will attend intensive seminar at Oxford, and be involved with other auxiliary activities (example: music concerts, museum visits, tours, and formal dinners) while in the UK as well.
