WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT ON TIPPECANOE MIDDLE SCHOOL FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: Will Winter ever go away? Just as we thought we were through the hard part of winter, we get hit again. I guess Punxsutawney Phil and Buckeye Chuck were correct in their winter predictions. This past Thursday pushed us beyond our five day calamity day limit so we will be making this day up through the use of our Blizzard Bags. Assignments made for Thursday’s day will be due on Monday. Please make sure that your student has them ready to go so we can count them as being excused for the day. We have made it through the first couple days of new state assessments. We have experienced very little issues with technology and our kids are doing an unbelievable job. In speaking with the students, they feel very confident that they have done well. Please continue to praise and encourage your students for their efforts. All we can ask is that they put forth their best efforts and in the sessions that I have observed we could not ask any more from our students. As we finish our first few groups, parents should be very proud of their children. BLIZZARD BAGS Again, this year, Tipp City Exempted Village Schools will implement the Blizzard Bag/e-Day in the event the district exceeds five calamity days. Should the district opt for this experience, the Superintendent will announce his decision on the day of the school cancellation. The feedback from students, parents, and staff helped administrators improve upon this initiative introduced last winter. We hope these clarifications and modifications listed below will help make the Blizzard Bag/e-Day a positive learning experience for students. Blizzard Bag e-Day assignments will be posted to the teacher’s website by 9:00 a.m. on the designated calamity day. Teachers will be accessible periodically via the school email during the period of the regular school day to answer questions. The assignment should be relevant and specific to current topics of study. Students must return the completed work within two school days of the date the assignment is posted. All completed work will be graded. Students who do not have access to the internet need to contact the teacher(s) upon return to school to make arrangements and confirm deadlines. Work that is not completed by its due date will result in a failing grade for that work and an unexcused absence for that class. If 75% of assignments are not completed it will be considered an unexcused absence for the entire day. STATE ASSESSMENT CALCULATORS On the math section of the new assessments there are two sections. One section is a calculator-free section while the other allows calculators to be used with certain limitations. Students may use their own and we will have a few on hand but it is important that if they use their own it has to meet the following requirements: Sixth and Seventh Grade = Four function calculators that have square roots and percentages Eighth Grade = Scientific calculators High School Level Courses = Graphing calculator. Students will not be permitted to use any other calculator but those listed above. Example: Even though it has fewer functions, a student taking Accelerated Geometry will not be able to use a four function calculator. They must use a graphing calculator such as a TI 85. Congratulations to our 7th grade girls’ basketball team for winning the CBC tournament. Coach Finfrock and the girls played a great game for the victory. I would also like to congratulate Coach Lindenauer and the 8th grade team for their second place finish in the CBC tournament. The girls lost a hard fought battle with an extremely tough team from Tecumseh. Due to the cold weather, the boys tournament games will be played here at the MS on Saturday, February 21st with the 7th grade beginning at 10:00 am and the 8th grade teams tipping off shortly after the morning game. Both of our boys teams are playing in the semifinals. The Championship game will move to Tuesday, Feb. 24 with the 7th graders playing at 5:30 and 8th following at Northridge. Please remember that we can only accept CBC passes for these games due to the fact it is the CBC tournament. TMS CLUBS Spreading Love Tippecanoe Middle School students in Friends of Rachel and Student Council combined forces to make handmade Valentines for veterans and senior citizens. It was a fun, crafty, creative time for these student volunteers from both clubs CURRENT 6TH GRADERS The Ohio Department of Health requires students entering the seventh grade to receive a Tdap (tetanus, Diphtheria and pertussis booster) immunization. Parents are encouraged to speak with their primary care physician to see if the Tdap booster is needed for their child and to schedule an appointment to receive the immunization. All students entering the seventh grade must receive the vaccination by the start of the school year. Ohio law allows a 14 school day period for compliance; however, as with other school immunization requirements, students are subject to exclusion from school if they do not provide documentation of the Tdap booster within this time frame. For more information, parents should contact their primary care physician or health care provider.
