Position: Coastal Centre Intern Organization: Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation Location: Goderich, Ontario Website: www.lakehuron.ca Employment duration: 8 weeks Salary: $4200.00 (over 8 weeks – 35 hrs / wk) Application deadline: June 8, 2014 The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation’s (LHCCC) mission is to provide leadership and expertise, in collaboration with partners, to achieve a healthy Lake Huron coastal ecosystem. The Coastal Centre is an organization dedicated to the conservation of Lake Huron’s natural shoreline environment by preserving, protecting, restoring and improving the natural resources and environment of Lake Huron. Our work is centered on research, education, and community outreach. About the job: This job is supported by Canada Summer Jobs and Ontario Trillium Foundation About the project: Coast Watchers is an initiative designed to engage members of the shoreline community to take an active part in both observing and helping to improve the quality of our nearshore waters through individual actions. Coast Watchers are trained to observe the coast, record shoreline conditions, and track beach litter. Coast Watchers also take regular photographs that are used to create time-lapse videos that demonstrate minute changes over time. With Coast Watchers collecting information methodically and consistently along the lakeshore, it will be possible to track conditions and trends. Job description: This is an independent project with assistance available from Coastal Centre staff. The Intern will be responsible for implementing a variety of related objectives that seek to improve program efficiency. Specifics: Investigate and present available options for improving data submission protocols Develop an improved approach to accept daily Coast Watcher photographs Deliver educational webinars using pre-made presentations Design improved methods for monitoring anomalies such as algae blooms and mortality events Specific threats to beach-dune habitats will be provided and the Intern will develop volunteer protocols designed to monitor these threats; professional contacts will be made available as required. Other duties as assigned Eligibility Requirements: Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment; Have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year; Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act3; and, Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
