2011. Web. 23 March 2014. < http://www.whoi.edu/ redtide/ >.
This source originated from Donald M. Arnold is the director of the U.S. NOAA, which is,
located Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). The WHOI is the largest oceanic
institution in the United States. This source originated in 1997 but has been updated and
devolved since then; the last time was in 2011. The purpose of this piece is to inform the public
of the dangers of the harmful algae and the effects it has on the public’s economical state. The
origin of this source gives it value in that it originated from Donald Arnold who is the director of
the largest oceanic institution in the United States, so the information presented is first hand and
most likely accurate. The purpose in this source gives it value in that it is making people aware
of what will happen so they can prepare for the economic challenges yet to come. This source is
a limitation; its questionable because it has used pictures and context from individuals who just
sends them in. The people reading the article are not informed of who sent this information,
they’re background, or which information comes from them.

naplesnews.com/news/2006/jul/21/scientists_talk_solutions_red_tide_forum/>.
This piece originated from one of the education and enterprise editor of Daily News; Julio
Ochoa. The piece appeared in Naples News in July of 2006; the paper is the main source of news
for Naples Florida and Collier County. The owner of Naples News Ohio-based Edward W.
Scripps Company. The purpose of this piece is to discuss the use of experimental practices to get
rid of the algae. The value of the origin is that the intended audience which is the people living in
Naples and Collier county are able to understand how this form of clay flocculation will impact
their environment. The value of the purpose is that the audience gets to see the scientific
perspective on experimental practices to solve the red tide issue. This source is a limited because
it is questionable in that the author Julio Ochoa is not a scientist himself he just used scientific
information.
Patterson, Jim. “Red Tide and Red Algae Effects.” Start 1. Start , n.d. Web. 6 March 2014. <
http://start1.org/red-tide/effects/>.
This piece originated from the non-profit organization Start which was founded by Jim Patterson.
Start is “at the forefront in securing funding to support scientific research and increase public
awareness about the importance of preserving our marine environment. The organization is
operated by “a five person committee with a combination of years of business experience and
unique skills…” The purpose of is piece is to express basic information on red tides and talk
about research on it for the public in order to raise concern. They want to expand the knowledge
of the public and extend research to better the environment. This piece has value in the purpose;
as stated in their mission statement “ Start’s vision is to improve the quality of our marine waters
Franklin 3
through research, public education and programs that restore marine habitats…” This means that
their goal is to educate. This article is a limitation because it is questionable in the fact that it only
provides general information on red tides, it doesn’t express.
Potter, Mark and Erin McClam. “Paralyzing Algae is Killing Manatees at a Records Pace in
Florida.” NBC News. NBC, 11 March 2013. Web. 22 March 2014. <http://
usnews.nbcnews.com /_news/2013/03/11/17268832-paralyzing-algae-is-killingmanatees-at-record-pace-in-florida>.
The article originated from a news repot by Mark Potter and Erin McClam, on March 11th 2013.
This piece originated from NBC news. The purpose of this article is to inform the public of the
effect the harmful algae has on the manatees, which are a part of their marine wildlife. Some of
the reasons behind the purpose of the article are to raise concern and awareness for the manatees.
The motivation behind this article is that the red tide was making huge and sudden changes to the
environment and the public needed to know. The intended audience is the people of the effected
areas which is the people living along the Gulf of the United States. The value of this piece is
that it is useful because it was stating factual information about the effect of a particular red tide
bloom that happened not to long ago and the impact it had on their marine life. This source is a
limitation because it is questionable in that it doesn’t provide information on who wrote the
article so you don’t now if they have previous knowledge in this area.
Hiney.“ Red Tide Ranger Training to Delve into the Mysteries of Red Tide.” Science at work for
Texans. Texas Sea Grant Program, January 2014. Web. 28 March 2014. < http://texassea-grant.tamu.edu/NewsAndEvents/MediaReleases/press12/ RedTide-Training2012.html>.
Franklin 4
This piece originated from Hiney, during the month of January of 2014. The purpose of this
piece is to inform people about the Red Tide Ranger and Texas Costal Naturalist programs so
they can get involved. The origin of this piece gives it value in that January is very recent, so the
programs mentioned in this article are current issues and solutions being addressed. The purpose
of this piece gives it value in that it not only educates people it gives them an opportunity to be
part of the solution. This source is a limitation, it is questionable in the fact that their isn’t much
information on the author so you don’t know how educated the author is or the relevance he has
to these organizations.
Morgan, Kimberly and Sherry Larkin. “ Economic Impacts of Red Tide Events on Restaurant
Sales.” AgEcon.com. University of Florida Gainesville, February 2006.PDF file. 23
March 2014. < http://ageconsearch.umn.edu/bitstream/ 35323/1/sp06mo07.pdf>.
This piece originated from Kimberly Morgan and Sherry Larkin, two graduate students from
the University of Florida. The piece originated from prepared selected papers for a presentation
at the Southern Agricultural Economics Association (SAEA) on February 2006 for the annual
meeting. The purpose of the SAEA is to “promote unity and effectiveness of effort among all
concern with those problems….”, the purpose of their study is to “generate information that
would better provide for a better understanding of the economic consequences of the red tide
events to restaurants…”. The purpose in their piece is to help estimate the change due to red tide
blooms to better prepare people for the red tide blooms. The origin of this piece gives it value in
that the authors are graduated students which coming from a university which is geographically
located in Florida, a place where red tide blooms are common. The origin also gives it value in
that in 2006 the red tide bloom was longer than most. The purpose of this piece gives it value in
that it expresses information rather than sway an opinion; this is because it provides factual
Franklin 5
information that gives people an understanding of the effect the tide has on their restaurant sales.
This piece is questionable because it is purpose directed toward the entire USA Gulf Coast but
the research is only in Florida. If the studies had been conducted in both areas then the
information presented would be more accurate.
National Centers for Costal Ocean Science. Economical Impacts of Harmful Algal Blooms.
NCCOS, n.d. PDF file. <http://www.cop.noaa.gov/stressors/ extremeevents/hab/
current/econimpact_08.pdf>.
This piece originated from an educational PDF file by the NCCOS, which is the primary costal
science branch within NOAA’s National Ocean service.
The purpose of this piece is to discuss the economic impacts of red time on the U.S. The origin
of this piece gives it value because the NCCOSS “works directly with managers, industry,
regulators, and scientists.” The value of the purpose is that it exemplifies how large the issue of
the red tide by putting it in monetary terms, which the people can understand. A limitation of this
source is that the NCCOS studies focus on a variety of topics, so the information about the red
tide may be lacking in comparison to a center that focuses on the red tide issue.

This piece originated from a research article by Mote Marine Laboratory, an independent marine
research institution. The purpose of this piece is to understand “how red tide blooms form, how
they dissipate into the environment and what effects they have on humans and marine animals.”
The value of the origin is that this laboratory focuses on marine science, such as red tide. The
purpose of this source gives it value because it evaluates both the causes and effects of red tide in
and on the environment. This source is a limitation because it focuses on the red tide in Florida,
living out other regions in the U.S. in which red tide is also an issue.

Mar. 2014.<http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2000-09-26/ news/0009260200_1 _redtide-texas-gulf-coast-fouling-beaches>.
This newspaper article originated from the Chicago Tribune News and from the red tide bloom
of fall 2000 in Corpus Christly, Texas. The article originated on September 26, 2000. The
purpose of this piece was to get people to know about how serious the algae is. The intended
audience is people in Chicago, they want people their to know about what is going on in other
places. The value of the origin of this piece is that in 2000 there was a major bloom of the Red
Tide and the Tribune raised concern in more areas than just Corpus Christi. The purpose of this
source gives it value in that people need to know that this algae is a very threatening factor to the
environment. This source is a limitation in that the origin of this source isn’t from Corpus
Christi, Texas. This is a limitation because the people in Chicago don’t hold a close connection
to this issue and they don’t see the issue going on so they cant see or feel a close relationship to
it.
