[ KEEP BELA BELA CLEAN ] June 1, 2015
The “ Keep Bela Bela Clean ” is an initiative by the Bela Bela Developmental Committee (DevCo).
This project is about cleaning the township on the 18 th July 2015, which is themed “Mandela Day”.
This includes removing all the rubbish in the township and transporting it to the dumping site.
The project is necessary because “cleanliness is next to Godliness” and “a clean community is a healthy community”. This is in line with the values that The Father of the Nation –Nelson
Mandela- stood for: A free and democratic South Africa for all who live in it.
Now, freedom goes hand in hand with one loving oneself and also looking after the place they live in. The environmental prescripts also stipulate that littering should not be allowed and all rubbish must be taken to dumping sites and should not be left in the streets.
The intended beneficiaries of the project are the residents of Bela Bela Township. They will enjoy staying in a clean environment , even if it’s just for a day or three.
Funding of the project will be mainly through donations from partners, like Bela Bela Municipality, individuals and business outlets. Letters of partnerships and donations requests will be written and delivered to the relevant potential donors by the 3 rd June 2015.
The project will be executed on Saturday the 18 th July 2015, starting at 07:00 and completing at
17:30. The target starting point is Moloto Street and we are hoping to clean up to Motsephiri
Street (Entire Bela Bela Township).
As one walks around the township, one cann ot help but realise that the township’s state of cleanliness is not up to standard. Most of the dirt in the township is due to littering and illegal dumping of domestic waste.
In order for people staying in the suburbs to respect people staying in the township, people staying in the townships must start first by respecting themselves. The first indicator that a person respects themselves is the cleanliness of their surroundings.
Further, the municipality has the responsibility for waste removal and dumping services. Equally, the community has the responsibility to ensure that their dwelling is clean and free of litter. The municipality can do everything in their power to clean but if the community does not do their part the township will remain dirty.
Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners spent many years in prison fighting for the democracy that we enjoy today. During those years he was living in a prison cell the size of a standard bathroom at Robben Island prison. He was sleeping on the floor with just two blankets.
However every morning his blankets would be neatly packed and the prison cell cleaned. This is indication that the Father of the Nation loved a clean environment irrespective of where he was.
Cleaning our communities is the least we can do to appreciate his efforts of fighting for a country where all of us are equal and live in harmony.
It is against this backdrop that a need was realized to do something about the cleanliness of Bela
Bela Township. All members of the community would be urged to join this campaign in whichever way they can. The Youth will be especially mobilized to come and pick up rubbish into refuse bags and transport it to the dumping area. This is also in line with environmental guidelines of a litter-free environment.

[ KEEP BELA BELA CLEAN ] June 1, 2015
Cleaning the township for one day only to find it dirty the next day is not sustainable. The extended intention of this project is long term sustainability of a clean township. So by cleaning the township on International Mandela Day is to raise awareness to the community that they have the ability to keep a clean environment.
In future recycling opportunities will be looked at to give the community an incentive for cleaning their own township. There are already people dealing with recycling to get income and they will also be engaged with for future partnerships with DevCo.
To clear the township of all debris and transporting to dumping sites.
To raise awareness that the community has the power to decide to live in a clean environment.
To sensitize the youth of Bela Bela that they can be involved in projects that do not require a lot of Capital but can benefit the community a lot.
To empower the community on recycling options available.
Funding/Donation - Donations to assist with the project will be received form from donors.
Community Participation -The community of Bela Bela will appreciate the intended effort and come to participate.
Stakeholder Expectations Management - The project will not be seen as a threat to take away jobs from people who are hired by the municipality to clean the township.
Municipal Support -The municipality will partner with DevCo to provide the required infrastructure to ensure the project proceeds smoothly.
External Manpower - This is a resource intensive project and if people don’t respond as expected then manpower will be less and the project might suffer to produce the intended results.
Internal Manpower - If DevCo members are reluctant to assist with the preparation and execution then the project might not be successful.
Funding/Donation - If the donors do not come through then the project will suffer.
Municipal Support - If the municipality cannot assist with waste removal equipment the project will not be successful.
The beneficiaries of this project are all the residents of Bela Bela Township. They will enjoy staying in a clean environment.
The municipality will also benefit because if they are serving a community that might become litter-conscious, therefore, their job will be minimized and they can focus the resources on other critical matters.
The project’s success will require the following:
