Good evening! We are so glad you could make it tonight. Our story for this evening comes from ______________ : . It is the story of how a beautiful queen saved her cousin and all the other Israelites from the mean and evil government minister, Haman. “Esther Did Her Best” Announcer 1: Our story begins with King Ahaseurus and his problem. King: I have a problem. I need a wife. I command all young women who are citizens of my kingdom be brought before me! Announcer 2: Mordecai heard the decree, and he thought about his cousin Esther. But Mordecai had a problem, too. Mordecai: I wonder…But, no. Esther and I aren’t citizens. We’re Israelite captives, this won’t do. Still, Esther is very beautiful and it would be wonderful if she were queen…hmm…I think I’ll send her to the King, who knows? Announcer 2: And Mordecai did send Esther. And guess what? The King chose Esther for his queen! Before Esther went to live in the Palace, Mordecai pulled her aside. Mordecai: Esther, you must never tell the king that you an Israelite, a captive. Esther: I won’t cousin, I promise. Announcer 1: So Esther became queen. Announcer 2: Sometime later, Mordecai overheard some of the King’s guards plotting to rob the palace and seize the King. Guard 1: I think that we could easily overtake the King. I mean, we are all in on it. Guard 2: Just think how wonderful it will be when we can wear those fancy robes and own all the treasures! Guard 1: No more listening to orders…we can GIVE the orders! Announcer 2: The guards had devised a plan and they went on to say… Song “A Devilish Deed” (boys) Announcer 3: Immediately after hearing about this plot, Mordecai knew that the King had to be warned. Mordecai: I must warn the King…On second thought, I should let Esther do it. I’ll tell her and let HER warn him. Announcer 4: So Mordecai went and talked with Esther, Esther: Oh, cousin, that’s terrible! What can we do? Mordecai: Esther, you need to tell the King what I told you. Have him investigate and lay a trap, then he’ll be ready when the villains come. Esther: I’ll tell him right away! Announcer 3: Esther did just as she promised. She went and told the King and the bad guys were caught red-handed. The guards were punished (escorted across stage in cuffs). King: I am so pleased! I am going to have to write this whole adventure down in my book of Chronicles. Announcer 4: Meanwhile, the sinister minister Haman was at work on a plot of his own. Haman: I know what I am going to do. I am going to see that I get appointed second in command to the King. And then, I will make a law that everyone has to bow down to me. Announcer 3: And Haman did just what he planned. However, Mordecai refused to bow to Haman. Mordecai: I won’t do it. I am an Israelite and I won’t bow down to ANY man. My fathers and I worship the one true God, and God’s laws forbid it! Haman: Rubbish! You’d better bow down or you’ll find yourself in a lot of trouble! Announcer 3: But Mordecai wouldn’t back down and Haman decided to do something about it. Haman: I’m not just going to stand by and let this happen! I’ve got to get rid of that creep, Mordecai! Maybe I can have him arrested, but what would be the charges? Let me think… Announcer 4: Haman thought and thought. Slowly an idea began to form. Haman: Hmmm…Mordecai is an Israelite. He worships that ONE God, not me and not even the King. Now if I can convince the King that Mordecai is part of a conspiracy… Announcer 3: So, Haman went to talk to the King Haman: Your Majesty, I’ve something very important to tell you. There is a group of people in your kingdom who don’t obey your laws. King: Well, that is not unusual… Haman: But your Majesty, this is serious! You must get rid of them, now! I’ll even put money in your treasury to accomplish it. Announcer 4: And Haman did put money in the treasury. And then he went one step further. Haman got the King to sign a paper giving him power to destroy all the captives. When the captives heard about this, they called a meeting to decide what to do. Song “In Trouble Too, Sing Praise” (small group) Announcer 5: Meanwhile, let’s get back to Esther. For several days she hadn’t seen Mordecai. So she called in a servant. Esther: Have you seen Mordecai? Servant 1: I haven’t seen him in palace. Mordecai and the other captives were wearing mourning clothes and no one is allowed in the palace dressed like that. Esther: Oh…get some proper clothes and take them to Mordecai, hurry! Announcer 5: The servant found the clothes and then he went to Mordecai. Mordecai: Take those things away! (Pause) Now listen carefully, I have an important message for the Queen. Go back and tell her that Haman has a plan to destroy all the captives. Tell her that he has even given the King money to do it. Announcer 5: The servant was off in a minute, and as soon s he gave Esther the message from Mordecai, she exclaimed… Esther: HAMAN?!?! The King’s minister? Are you sure? Servant 1: Yes, my Queen, that is exactly what Mordecai said. Here read this. Esther: I can’t believe it! This is a decree authorizing the destruction of all the Israelites. I must do something! But what can I do? Servant, here; take this message to Mordecai. Announcer 5: The servant delivered the message to Mordecai and when Mordecai read it, he nearly exploded! Mordecai: What does she mean she can’t help? What’s this stupid law that says she’ll be killed if she approaches the king without being sent for? (servant paces nervously, shrugging) Moredai: If she approaches the King, it’s sudden death? If she stays where she is, it’s sudden death! Here, take this to the Queen! Servant 1: Yes, sir, as you wish. Announcer 5: So, the messenger returned to the Queen. Esther dismissed the servant and when she was alone, she read Mordecai’s note. Esther (reading): “Only you and I know that you, too, are one of the Israelite captives. But don’t think you will escape Haman’s destruction just because you are in the palace. His influence reaches everywhere. You must stand up for yourself and your people. You’re the only one who can help us. You must go to the King.” What am I going to do? The King hasn’t sent for me, and I have no idea that he will. If I don’t go to him, my people w, I will surely die. If I go to the King and he doesn’t receive me, I will die and they will still be in danger… Even if does receive me, what can I say or do to keep Haman from carrying out his plan? Song “Searching for an Answer” (solo: ….; Girls) Announcer 6: Esther figured out something that might work. She called for a messenger and gave her a message to give to Mordecai. Messenger: Mordecai, Esther sent me to tell you that she has figured out what to do. She wants you to gather all of the captives together and pray for three days. At the end of the three days, she will go the King. Mordecai: Thank you. Please, tell the Queen I will do just as she says. Announcer 6: All went according to plan. The captives fasted and prayed, and in the palace Esther and her ladies did the same thing. Three days later as she prepared to go to the King, Esther was pacing, anxiously. Esther: I’m so nervous. I could die. I’ve got to get myself together. Oh, I hope this works… Announcer 6: So Esther went to the King and as she approached, the King said sternly… King: What are you doing here, Esther? Esther: (stuttering) I..I just wanted..I haven’t seen you in so long, I… I just came to invite you and Haman to have dinner with me. Announcer 6: The King softened, and smiled as he said, King: Ok, we’ll be there. Announcer 6: As they sat down to dinner, the King realized that something more was on Esther’s mind. King: Esther, what do you really want? Ask and it is yours. Announcer 6: Esther began to think just how to say what she wanted. Thoughts raced through her mind. Song “I Don’t Want Much” (2 solos and small choir) Announcer 7: And the King asked again. King: Esther, What is it that you want? Announcer 7: Esther looked up from her thoughts and said innocently… Esther: I just want you and Haman to have dinner with me again tomorrow night. King: I wish you would be serious! But a home-cooked meal is hard to refuse. We’ll come, won’t we Haman? Haman: Oh, goodness, gracious! Yes, indeed! Announcer 7: As Haman sat there, he began to think how glorious this was, and when he got home he immediately went to his wife… Haman: Honey, I’m home! Guess what? The King and Queen have invited me to dine with them again tomorrow! Not just once, but twice! And I am the only one invited! Wife: Slow down, honey! That is nice but… Haman: No, it’s better than nice! Do you realize what this means? Song: “Executive On The Move” (Solos – Haman and his wife, choir) Announcer 8: But there was still something that was bothering Haman…Mordecai. Haman: That Mordecai still bothers me! I’ll never be satisfied as long as he’s around. I have to get rid of him, and my original plan isn’t working fast enough. If only, I could take things into my own hands. Wife: Haman, I’m sure you will think of something if you just keep your mind to it. Maybe you could get the King to sentence Mordecai for some crime… Haman: That’s it! I will have him sentenced and then I can oversee his execution myself! You are a genius! No need to waste time, I will have my servant being building the gallows immediately, just in case… Wife: Honey, if you are that worried, maybe you should go back to the palace. You always seem to think so much better there. Haman: Not only that, but then I would be there just in case something should come up. Announcer 8: So, Haman went back to the palace. Meanwhile, back at the palace…King Ahaseurus was having trouble falling asleep. King: Servant! Servant! I can’t sleep! Read to me a story. How about one from my Chronicles, I do love a good story about me… Announcer 8: So, the servant opened the book and began reading a random page… Servant 2: “…and Mordecai was responsible for uncovering the plot of the King’s men who guarded the threshold. He revealed that they sought to lay hands upon the King and kill him. Because of Mordecai, the plot was foiled and then…” King: Hold on, wait a minute! What was ever done for Mordecai? After all, he did save my life. Servant 2: Nothing. King: Well, that is a serious oversight! I must do something about that. Maybe I can do it right now. Are any of my ministers in the palace tonight? Servant 2: Yes, You’re majesty. I believe Haman is. King: Well, get him! Servant 2: Yes sir, right away… Haman: Your Majesty, You wanted to see me? King: Yes, Haman. I want your advice. If I wished to honor a man in my kingdom who had done me a great service, what do you think I should do for him? Announcer 9: Haman assumed that the King wanted to honor him. Haman (aside): At last, I am going to get my reward! But I mustn’t be hasty. I must be careful. I don’t want to be greedy. I am rich enough, so I won’t ask for money. I’ll ask for glory! This is my chance to get just what I deserve! King: Well… Haman: I was just thinking. If I wished to honor a man I would dress him in the King’s royal robes, put him on the King’s finest horse, and let him ride through the city and be proclaimed as a hero to everyone. King: Excellent idea! It’s perfect! Go and see that all these things are done for Mordecai, the Israelite. Announcer 9: Now, I can’t tell you what Haman said, but he did carry out the King’s orders…with a smile on his face and murder in his heart. He was still grumbling as he stalked towards the palace for dinner. Haman: This is the worst day of my life! I have never been so humiliated! I won’t stand for this. I am second in command in this country. I am going to use my powers. Tonight I will finish this business with Mordecai once and for all. Announcer 9: Meanwhile, inside the palace, Esther was busy with important business too. She hadn’t forgotten about her promise to save her people. She prepared very carefully for the banquet. Song ”Gonna Sit at the Table with the King” Announcer 10: Finally the King and Haman arrived and the banquet began. During dinner, the king turned to Esther and said… King: You still haven’t told me your request. Ask and it is yours. Announcer 10: Suddenly, it got very quiet. Esther stood and looked at Haman and then she looked at the King. Esther: Your Majesty, I only want to save my life, and to save the lives of my people. If I don’t do something we are all going to be destroyed! King: Destroyed?? What are you talking about? Who would dare threaten your life? And the lives of ‘your people’? What does that even mean? Who are your people? Esther: The Israelites are my people. And we are going to be destroyed! The man responsible for all this is right here…it is Haman! He hated Mordecai so much that he got you to sign that order to destroy all the Israelites. Well, I’m an Israelite and Mordecai is my cousin! Announcer 10: The King became furious. He was so angry that he left the room for a moment just to keep himself from doing something drastic to Haman. Haman realized that his life was now in danger and the King was going to punish him. So he immediately got down on his knees and began pleading with Esther… Haman: Your Majesty, have mercy on me! The King will surely kill me if you don’t do something to stop him! Save me! Don’t let him get me! Announcer 11: Haman threw himself at Esther just as the Kin came back into the room. The King yelled… King: Guards, Guards! Guards 3&4: Yes, Your Majesty? King: Grab that man and don’t let him get away! Guards 3&4: Right away, sir! Announcer 11: There was a scuffle, but Haman was finally wrestled to the floor and King looked down at him and said… King: Haman, you’d better be glad that I didn’t get you myself! You were going to kill innocent people to satisfy your own greed and jealousy. If it hadn’t been for Esther, I would have been guilty of helping you. I am going to see that you are punished….but nothing seems bad enough. Servant 3: Your majesty, please forgive me. Haman had me build some gallows to be used for Mordecai. I didn’t want to, but I had to follow orders. King: That’s it! You have provided your own punishment, Haman. You will be hanged on the very gallows you prepared for Mordecai. Concluder: And so, we come to the end of our story. Haman, who planned everyone else’s destruction, was destroyed. (Haman bows to the crowd and exits with guards 3&4 following close behind) Mordecai, who saved the King and remained true to the one God, was rewarded. (Mordecai bows and exits) The King, who almost made a very bad mistake, was much wiser. (King bows and exits) Esther, who believed that God would answer her prayer and save her people, was honored. (Esther bows and exits) And the choir, who had been a part of it all, learned that everything works out right when you trust the Lord! Song “Everything Works Out Right”
