More detailed information about each session

Mountain First Aid.

A short introduction to dealing with First Aid incidents and scenarios in the mountain environment. This is a very basic hands on and practical approach which should give you the insight and confidence to deal with an incident when leading or walking with a group.

Group Management in the Mountains.

Many club walk leaders have questions about how to plan and manage their group safely when walking in the hills. This session will provide an opportunity to quiz experienced

Tollymore staff on a variety of related issues including:

Suitable terrain

Route Cards

Equipment

Briefing

Steep ground management

Mountain Photography.

The idea behind this session is to encourage anyone with a digital camera to use it when out in the hills. We will have a very experienced mountaineer and photographer to help facilitate those on this course and we hope to produce a “slide” show of the images for the end of day tea and coffee. Tollymore NOC will have a small number of digital cameras available but ideally those attending should bring their own camera.

Introduction to Basic Navigation.

A short hill based introduction into interpreting the map and the terrain in which we walk.

We will focus on the following:

Orientating the map

Contour interpretation

Measuring distance

Taking a bearing

Walking on a bearing.

We will spend a short time in the classroom at the start of this session to set the scene.

Mountain Flora and Fauna.

This session hopes to combine a short walk with an insight into the rich variety of wildlife and plant life that make the hills their home. It is often surprising how little many walkers know about the richness of mountain environments. During the walk we will utilise the knowledge and experience of Tollymore instructors and UFRC members. If you have a pair of binoculars please bring them.

Next step Navigation.

A step on from “Introduction to Basic Navigation” – this session will push the accuracy in all aspects to a higher level. Amongst other aspects we will cover:

Much finer detail contour understanding

Navigation tactics

Navigating to Nothing (intriguing)

Measuring distance on the map and ground using pacing and timing

Re-location techniques

Use of the GPS.

What you will need: Tollymore NOC will supply any technical equipment required – however, those attending should bring their usual hill walking clothing and equipment for the forecast weather conditions. As a minimum this should be proper hill walking boots, warm clothing layers, fleece jacket, waterproof jacket and trousers, warm hat and gloves, gaiters, 1 : 25,000 Mournes map, compass, small first aid kit and any personal medication, torch, notebook, pencil and small day pack @ 30 litres.

A flask with a warm drink may also be useful – and any other small snacks you normally carry on the hills. These training days can be quite static so it is better to come prepared and keep warm and comfortable.
