TEKS: 1.8A-D: (8) Earth and space. The student knows that the natural world includes the air around us and objects in the sky. The student is expected to: (A) record weather information, including relative temperature, such as hot or cold, clear or cloudy, calm or windy, and rainy or icy; (B) observe and record changes in the appearance of objects in the sky such as clouds, the Moon, and stars, including the Sun; (C) identify characteristics of the seasons of the year and day and night; and (D) demonstrate that air is all around us and observe that wind is moving air. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Materials: Cube template, weather conditions handout, crayons, pencils, scissors, glue, The Night Before Thanksgiving by Natasha Wing, Smartboard, iPads, computer, fake T.V. screen, weather conditions pictures, window mural handout _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Teaching Procedure: 1. Motivation: Introduce daily forecast and watch some weather forecasts. Allow students to practice and then each day, students will get to be the meteorologist for the day. 2. Prior Learning: Students will have prior knowledge about each season because we studied them all last week. They should be able to recognize seasonal characteristics, such as what we do, eat, and wear during fall. 3. Statement of Objective: This week we are going to learn about the weather and what weather conditions usually occur during each season. Today, we are going to learn all about the weather during fall. 4. Purpose (statement/question): Why is it important for us to learn about the weather? Students need to know about all of the different weather conditions as well as which ones usually occur during each season. This helps them recognize what is normal/not normal weather for each season. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 5. Instructional Steps: a. Guided Practice: We will read the book, The Night Before Thanksgiving by Natasha Wing, and discuss the kinds of weather present in the story. We will discuss that normal weather for fall is cool, calm, rainy, and windy. We will have a class discussion on those terms and what they mean. b. Independent Practice: Students will then complete a portion of their weather cube. They will color and cut out the picture of windy weather as well as the word windy. Then they will glue the word and picture on one side of the cube. After the cube, students will draw a scene showing a weather condition we learned about today. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Closure: Review: We will review the weather we learned about today and we will compare/contrast how normal seasonal conditions are similar/different to seasonal conditions in Texas. Future Learning: “Tomorrow we will learn about another season’s weather conditions. Can you guess what season’s weather conditions we will learn about?” Students should say winter. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Lesson Extension and/or Modification: Students who finish early will be given a choice board, in which they will choose an activity to do on one of non-fiction book about weather. The activities they can choose to do are: 1. Write a summary 2. Write a letter to a friend telling him/her about the book you read 3. Choose 3 words from the book and use each in a sentence 4. Write 4-5 facts you learned about weather from the book you read. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Assessment of Learning: The assessment will be weather cube at the end of the week. Each day I will assess students on their weather window mural.
