Arthur Lessac
Throughout his nearly 80-year career, Dr.
Lessac has focused on feeling & body
movement in both singing & acting. He first
studied music at the Eastman School of Music,
where he received his BA. He received degrees
and in Voice-Speech Clinical Therapy from NYU.
As a therapist, he concentrated on the abilities
of his patients, rather than their deficits, and
empowered them to feel the pleasure of vocal
vibration or body energy as a guide to optimal
expression & wellness.
He has worked on Broadway and founded the
National Academy of Vocal Arts. He taught
voice at the Stella Adler Theater Studio and was
appointed teacher of voice, speech, singing &
dialect for the repertory company of Elia Kazan
& Robert Whitehead at Lincoln Center. He was
appointed full professor at SUNY-Binghamton to
develop their undergraduate & MFA acting
program. While at SUNY, he began conducting
intensive workshops that included the tenets of
his voice & body work. He published 2 classic
texts: The Use & Training of the Human Voice
and The Use & Training of the Human Body.
The Lessac Institute was established in 1998 to
maintain his pedagogical practices & certify
master teachers, who offer his “intensives”
worldwide.
At age 100, he continues to inspire countless
students with knowledge, energy, & desire for
continued learning.
Mark Madsen, DMA
Dr. Madsen is a private voice teacher,
composer, and guitarist in St. Louis. He
received his BA in voice at the University of
Northern Colorado in 1972, with a minor in
German. His MA is in Choral Literature and
Conducting. He began his academic career at
the University of Florida in 1980, as faculty &
teacher of studio voice. His interest in voice
science led to a fellowship grant at the
University of Florida, and he pursued these
studies at the University of Arizona under
Thomas Hixon, where he received his doctorate
in vocal performance with minors in opera
directing and vocal pedagogy. His most recent
academic appointment was at the University of
Missouri-St. Louis, as Coordinator of Vocal
Studies, from 1986 to 2006.
His varied career has included involvement with
the International Symposium of Baroque Choral
Music in Vienna, the San Francisco Opera, the
Metropolitan Opera, and the Centre
International de Formation Musicale in Nice,
France. Along the way, he incorporated
techniques from the Alexander & Feldenkrais
methods, as well as Kundalini yoga, to form a
unique and therapeutic approach to teaching
voice. Additional information can be found on
his website: www.midnightsunburstmusic.com.
Katherine Verdolini Abbott, Ph.D., CCCSLP
Dr. Verdolini Abbott is Professor of Communication
Sciences and Disorders in the School of Health and
Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh.
Her general area of interest is clinical voice science.
Her current research focuses on the role of vocalization
for wound healing in the larynx, motor learning
principles applied to models of vocal training, and
clinical trials in voice training. She has received one
K08 award and two R01 research awards from the
National Institute on Deafness and she serves as
consultant on other research awards from the National
Institutes of Health. She is former Editor for Speech
for the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing
Research.
Dr. Verdolini Abbott developed and conducts
workshops on a systematic approach to optimal voice
use and voice therapy for hyper- and hypofunction,
Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Training. Memberships
include the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association, of which she is Fellow and received the
Honors of the Association in 2009, the Voice and
Speech Trainers Association, and the National
Association of Teachers of Singing.
About the
Course
LMRVT-Basic
Course Description: The course provides
theoretical background and practical training in
Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Training (LMRVT).
LMRVT is a holistic approach to voice therapy
appropriate for all voice clients, as well as
individuals with hyper- and hypofunctional voice
disorders. It arises from the convergence of
physical and cognitive sciences, and performing arts
traditions. A basic premise in LMRVT is that a
target laryngeal configuration can be identified
which tends to produce the strongest
voice output using the least amount of pulmonary
effort, and also coincides with relatively low vocal
fold impact stresses. The result is a wellfunctioning voice that can be heard in most
environments, and that is produced easily with
minimum risk of injury. A parallel, equally
important, premise is that the acquisition of new
vocal skills—in LMRVT or in other approaches—is
enhanced by attention to sensory information
relative to gestures’ effects in training rather than
verbal, mechanistic explanations. The course will
(1) cover the basic scientific information behind the
premises; (2) provide detailed step-by-step
information about the implementation of LMRVT;
and (3) provide practical demonstrations of the
approach.
Course Objectives:
(1) Describe the basic science foundations of
LMRVT;
(2) List the steps of the LMRVT program;
(3) Evaluate demonstrations of LMRVT and its
extension in vocal performance training;
(4) Apply LMRVT during self-practice and with
appropriate client populations.

About the
Course
LMRVT-Kids (5-10)
Course Description: The course provides
theoretical background & practical training in
Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Therapy-Kids (510) program, which is a modification of the adult
version taught in a separate seminar. In this
course, the basic idea presented is that it may be
time to rethink traditional models of voice therapy
for children. Such models generally emphasize
vocal hygiene & voice conservation using operant
conditioning tools. Both practical & theoretical
considerations now offer us the opportunity to
adopt a more functional (and fun!!) view of voice
therapy for children with voice problems.
The course will provide an overview by discussing
recent findings in a)laryngeal biomechanics;
b)motor development & learning; c)social,
cognitive, & personality development; and
d)factors affecting compliance in relation to
children, as relevant to voice therapy. This review
will be followed by examples of how experimental
results can be folded into effective therapy
programs for children with voice disorders.
Practical examples will be provided in the form of
step-by-step instructions, as will materials for
clinical use. A proposal will be that the previous
emphasis on vocal hygiene & voice conservation
may be limited in its utility, and that new thinking
now allows us to consider more functional
approaches for pediatric voice therapy.
Course Objectives:
(1) To provide and update on basic science
findings relevant for voice therapy with children;
(2) To provide examples of how the findings can
be applied to voice therapy with children in a
systematic, step-by-step therapy program;
(3) To provide practical materials for clinicians
who work with children in voice therapy

About the
Course
LMRVT-E
Course Description: The course assumes prior
training in Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Training
(LMRVT), which is a holistic approach to voice
training appropriate both to enhance the voice and
for individuals with hyper- and hypofunctional voice
disorders. The present LMRVT-E course builds on
prior training, by extending basic LMRVT science
and methods to incorporate additional speech &
voice works as developed by Lessac, and vocal
“energy” work as developed by Madsen. Specific
additional training will be provided by Lessac’s
“body NRGs”, “consonant NRG”, “tonal NRG”, and
“structural NRG” as they apply to treatment &
prevention of vocal pathology in speech and
singing. Also included will be work in Madsen’s
approach to freeing “energy blocks” in speech &
singing, based on yogic meridian theory & practice.
The course is one day and will focus on the practice
of the materials in one’s own voice and speech, as
well as in individuals with vocal pathology.
Prior training in LMRVT, or instructor permission, is
a requirement for course participation.
Course Objectives:
(1) Introduce extensions to the basic LMRVT
program, including body & voice “NRGs” after
Lessac, and yogic meridian work after Madsen;
(2) Provide personal practice opportunities for
attendees, in speech & singing, in the methods
introduced;
(3) Provide practice opportunities for participants
to apply the methods to individuals with voice
problems
